Simon Shenton, Head of LED Development at Luceco, discusses the company’s approach to creating a more sustainable future, not only for itself but also for its valued customers.
Combining drive, energy and expertise, lighting and electrical provider Luceco Group is dedicated to reducing its absolute greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions by 46.2% by 2031, tackling climate change through not only innovative products but also via business operations, people and culture, as well as collaboration with both experts and consumers within the electrotechnical industry. We feel that a holistic approach to sustainability such as this is the best way to achieve our goals.
We can all see the importance of working towards a more sustainable future for ourselves, our children and beyond and, in the midst of the climate emergency, we must work hard to achieve this.
Sustainable business
We believe that companies such as ours have a responsibility to recognise this need and ensure that we continually evolve our entire business operation for the benefit of all. To this end, we are focusing on the development of low carbon products, ensuring that the plastic we use is recycled and that our packaging is recyclable.
However, there is a balance to maintain between delivering a sustainable business without compromising product quality and performance. Along with scrutinising our manufacturing capability to improve our processes, we are constantly striving to find new ways to further improve the performance of our products – whether they are electrical components, EV chargers or lighting – with our ultimate goal being to create cutting-edge designs with lower carbon footprints.
Illuminating the importance of Net Zero
At Luceco, we recognise the important role we play in achieving Net Zero, and our low carbon products can help businesses reduce energy consumption and achieve their own sustainability targets.
Our product development is focused on driving forward low carbon and green commitments – we are continuously improving the lumens per watt of our LED products to give customers more light for every watt of energy they consume. Additionally, we are designing ways to improve the distribution of LEDs, reducing the number of lights needed and overall energy consumption.
One example of Luceco’s sustainable lighting solutions is the Luxbay Ultra warehouse linear product, designed to replace traditional discharge lighting in commercial and industrial settings. The Luxbay Ultra, consumes 50% less energy compared to traditional lighting solutions and has a longer lifespan.
While technology, especially LED, is developing rapidly, we want to see recommendations, standards and guidance surrounding the technology improved to match its potential as this will help push the sustainability agenda further forward. As part of our commitment to transparency, we signed up for the Carbon Disclosure Project and achieved operational Net Zero in 2021 and joined the Influential Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to continue reducing our carbon footprint.
Helping other companies achieve their sustainability goals
Luceco’s products can help businesses reduce their energy consumption and achieve their own sustainability targets. By investing in low carbon solutions, companies can make a positive impact on the environment while also saving on energy costs. Luceco is at the forefront of thought leadership in this area, leading the way in sustainable product development and committing to reducing both our and our customers’ carbon footprints.
With more customers approaching us with their own sustainability goals, by conducting a lighting audit, we can make recommendations for new fixtures and controls that are designed to reduce energy consumption.
LED lights typically produce useful light for two or even three times longer and consume up to 80% less energy than their conventional counterparts. This longer LED life of produces savings throughout the product lifecycle, including savings on materials, installation costs (as systems could run for 10 years or more) as well as maintenance and replacement costs, making them the go-to option for companies who are seriously targeting net zero.
New standards to strive for
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) aims to mobilise companies to take action on climate change by setting science based greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets.
For the LED lighting industry, SBTi provides guidance on setting targets in line with limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels involving reducing emissions of all aspects LED lighting, including manufacturing, transportation, use and end-of-life disposal.
SBTi provides a framework for companies such as Luceco to develop and validate their targets, and its guidelines are endorsed by leading sustainability organisations, including the United Nations Global Compact, the World Wildlife Fund, and the Carbon Trust.
By committing to science based targets, we can progress towards a more sustainable future.
It’s never been more important for everyone to assess their energy usage and the impact we all have on the planet. Climate change is one of the biggest challenges the world faces and as a manufacturer of low carbon products, we at Luceco have a role to play in achieving Net Zero.
