EDA Investor in Training Award winners are hand-picked from thousands of managers in wholesaler and manufacturer businesses across the UK for their impressive commitment to developing their teams using the Association’s module and apprenticeship programmes.

Association President, CEF’s Chris Ashworth, said: “Congratulations to this year’s EDA Investor in Training trophy winners. These leaders are delivering positive change in their businesses through the portfolio of professional training that the Association offers its members and affiliates.”

The 2024 winners are:

Simon Mooney, Park Electrical Distributors Ltd (ANEW buying group)

Lee Warren, Devondale Electrical Distributors Ltd (part of Grant & Stone) (AWEBB buying group)

Lyndon Sinnett, CEF Ltd

Robin Weaving, Edmundson Electrical Ltd

Carla Santos, CDR Electrical Wholesalers Ltd (Fegime UK buying group)

Amanda Rippon, Rexel UK Ltd

Kate Booth, Stearn Electric Co Ltd

Mark Ashworth, ABM Electrical Wholesale Ltd (The IBA Buying Group)

Tom Jones, Kempston Controls (Affiliate Manufacturer)

Margaret Fitzsimons, CEO at the EDA, added “Choosing tonight’s award winners has been harder than ever as competition is fierce. Demand for apprentices remains healthy and turning the EDA’s training modules into e-learning via The EDA Academy has seen a surge in demand with twice as many wholesaler branches using them in 2023 than in the previous year. Overall, the number of organisations using the modules has increased by 50% over the same period.”

Fast and efficient, exchanging hole saws is a matter of simply pushing the button and sliding. Mandrex’s quick-release arbors are universal, meaning they don’t just work with the brand’s own entire range – they fit any hole saw on the market. The Mandrex system also allows electricians to work with greater precision by mounting two hole saws on the same arbor.

Mandrex boasts a large hole-saw range making it the perfect choice for a point of sale display offering customers a comprehensive solution. Precision engineered in Holland, the M42 range features ejection holes for extra chip release and weight reduction. Hardened steel and special tooth geometry provides a smooth cut every time with less feed pressure.

Mandrex’s main point of sale display features a bespoke range individually tailored to each stockist’s needs. Mandrex also offers an additional small stand featuring its complete hole saw kits for electricians.

Susan Bailey, UK Marketing Manager for Mandrex, said: “Retailers tell me they value our high levels of customer service and always get great feedback from customers about the quality, durability and value of our hole saw range. From our distribution and service centre in West Sussex we offer next-day delivery and keep a huge range in stock at all times to ensure your point of sale displays are always fully stocked.”

CEF has launched a new industry product, designed by a loyal CEF customer. The JAKODA Socket Tester Holder, created by Duncan Thomson, using components from his local store, is now available to purchase across 400+ CEF branches and online.

Duncan, an electrician himself, has solved a significant problem for professionals in the industry – socket testers being damaged while loose in tool bags. After years of frustration and replacements, Duncan took to creating his own solution, using components sourced from his local CEF Bideford branch, and innovatively put together at his kitchen table, the STH was created.

After introducing the product to his local store and a few posts on his Instagram page, Surf Bay Spark, it quickly gained popularity in his local area and with tradesmen around the UK. He continued producing them at home and eventually, as demand grew bigger, he was approached by one of CEF’S own suppliers, Super Rod, to assist.

This led to the partnership which has seen the JAKODA Holder produced and sold in CEF’s 400+ branches throughout the country, as well as on the brands website, making his product available to tradespeople all over the UK.

Now in its fifth year of trading as an independent lighting company, Ovia has established itself as a leading player in the lighting sector. With Issue 5 of the Ovia catalogue just released into circulation, Mike Collins, Managing Director, shines a light on one of the new light fittings which he believes will be a star performer for the company this year.

Small and compact in name and format but packing a huge punch when it comes to features and benefits is the new Inceptor Milli dimmable, fixed, fire-rated LED downlight. Designed to complement the range of downlight solutions already offered by Ovia, Inceptor Milli is aimed predominantly at the domestic market. It combines style and functionality to provide installers with a downlight that is quick and easy to fit and offers a range of features at the flick of a switch.

Standard or Baffle

Inceptor Milli is an IP65-rated downlight that is available both in standard/fixed and baffle versions. The standard version provides a 60 ͦ beam angle, while the baffle provides a more focused 25 ͦ angle. The baffle design ensures a more concentrated and directional illumination, making it an ideal choice for highlighting specific areas. The baffle is offered in a choice of white or black.

Five bezel finishes are available, with a choice of White, Black, Chrome, Satin Chrome and Antique Brass finishes offered. With the standard version you simply order the finish of your choice as a fixed finish. The baffle version is supplied with a white bezel, but this can be interchanged with any of the other finishes and they are purchased separately. Simply twist the existing bezel to remove and replace with the colour finish of your choice. This also means that for a fresh new look in the future, it is simply a case of replacing the bezels with an alternative finish.

Switching it up

A key feature to highlight with the Milli downlight is the element of control that is offered in this one fitting. There is the option to seamlessly switch between 6.4W and 4W power outputs using a single switch to provide users with unprecedented control over their lighting environments. There is also the ability to easily switch the colour temperatures between 2700K (Warm White), 4000K (Cool White) and 6500K (Daylight). This allows for effortless adaptation to varying lighting needs and makes it easy for the end user to tailor their lighting to suit their individual requirements. Whether they are seeking a vibrant, well-lit atmosphere or a more subdued, energy-conscious ambiance, the Inceptor Milli ensures optimal flexibility.

Rotatable insulation cover

One feature that sets the Inceptor Milli apart from many downlights on the market is the insulation cover which introduces a practical solution for installation challenges. The rotatable insulation cover allows you to install the downlights safely under insulation but also adjust the cover allowing for 5mm extra clearance. On the standard/fixed Milli downlight the insulation cover can be twisted to the up and down position and still fit in a 60mm void. The baffle version can only fit in a 60mm void when the insulation cover is down and the plasterboard is a minimum thickness of 12.5cm.

By accommodating insulation materials more effectively, the Inceptor Milli ensures optimal performance. Unrestricted airflow around the fixture helps manage heat dissipation, contributing to the longevity and efficiency of the downlight. Our downlights are Fire Rated to 30, 60 and 90 minutes and also feature an Intumescent Strip, which, when exposed to fire, expands to seal the gap between the light fitting and plasterboard.

Fast-Fit connection

All our Inceptor Milli downlights are supplied pre-wired with a Fast-Fit, 3-Pole and Loop Flow connector, and we also provide a loose push-fit Flow connector in the box which ensures a quick and easy installation process.

Broad cut-out range

The Inceptor Milli has a broad cut-out range of 64mm to 75mm, which allows the downlights to be installed in a wide range of existing ceiling downlight cut-outs.

Multi-pack

With the aim of providing a practical and cost-effective solution for a comprehensive range of lighting projects, Inceptor Milli is available in a convenient 10-pack box, as well as in singles.

Sustainable Inceptor

Our industry is currently evolving from a linear to a circular economy, and this will only intensify in the coming months and years. The emphasis is on reducing the amount of waste that goes to landfill by embracing a re-using, remaking/repairing and recycling mentality. Sustainability drives all the decisions and actions we make at Ovia. We are committed to contributing to the transition to a circular economy and our aim is to make Ovia market leader in sustainable lighting.

TM66 Assured Product Verification Scheme

We are working towards making sure all of our Inceptor luminaires meet the requirements of the TM66 Assured Product Verification Scheme. This scheme is an innovative initiative developed and fulfilled by the Lighting Industry Association (LIA) and endorsed by CIBSE (Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers) and its aim is to advance circular economy practices within the lighting industry. TM66 testing involves the gathering of thorough evidence to support the specifications of our product range. We use the LIA to verify our TM66 results to ensure we have a consistent and accurate rating.

We are proud advocates of TM66 and have been given the opportunity to be founding partners, demonstrating our commitment to a circular economy for our industry.

Matthew Parton, Product Development Manager at ESP, looks at the self-test area of the emergency lighting sector and how it can save building owners time and money.

Emergency lighting is a legal requirement in almost every building, with one simple, life-saving task: to provide light if a power outage shuts down a building’s standard operational lighting. It is the responsibility of building owners and responsible persons to prove that the emergency lighting systems they are responsible for are working correctly and are regularly maintained so that they are in full working order.

According to BS5266-1 Emergency Lighting – Code of practice for the emergency lighting of premises, the functional operation of the emergency lighting systems falls onto the responsibility of the user (i.e. the appropriate person appointed responsible for the premises).

BS 5266-1, Section 12 outlines the recommended routine testing of the system. These include (but is not definitive to):

Checking functional operation “at least every month”.

Full rated duration test (on each luminaire) “at least annually” (full discharge of batteries to check all working as required).

Logging of failures to any part of the system and introducing alternate safety procedures until this is repaired.

Recording all testing and repair information in a logbook.

All emergency lighting installations must have routine tests carried out, with each system luminaire the subject of daily, monthly and annual testing. These tests should all be documented with the results including maintenance and rectification results all held on file.

Whilst the testing of emergency lighting does not take much effort and isn’t difficult, manually inspecting every single lighting luminaire for lamp starting, operation and duration performance can be a very labour intensive and therefore expensive task. However, with the latest improvements in technology, routine testing can be simple, automatic and therefore much less expensive. It is now possible for building owners to take advantage of emergency lighting equipment that ‘self-tests’ in accordance with the relevant standards.

Reduce the burden

Installing self-test emergency lighting units can reduce the burden of testing emergency lighting installations as they perform all mandatory testing automatically, removing the need for manual testing to be carried out by the user or building owner. The resulting reduction of labour time leads to inevitable cost savings. Whilst the initial costs for the products may be higher, overall, they will provide a very short payback period – making them an ideal option that should be given consideration at the beginning of any project.

The benefits of self-test emergency light units include ease of installation, with no need for key switches or additional data cables for example. Convenience is also a major plus, with mandatory tests carried out without disruption to the normal use of the building, and any faults identified. The self-test units identify faults in luminaires and any faults are then highlighted to maintenance personnel, saving them the time and effort it would take to search the building in question for faults.

Self-test units use an accurate internal clock programmed to interrupt the permanent mains supply at set intervals, initiating emergency lighting tests. Short duration weekly and monthly tests and annual full duration tests are automatically activated with the results shown via an LED indicator on the fitting. The responsible person only needs to check the indicator and it means that only lights with reported faults will need to be attended to by maintenance personnel.

Extra peace of mind

During initial power up of a self-test unit, an automatic commissioning stage will begin. The internal clock will commence at a random time between 0 and 24 hours – this avoids the luminaires all going into test at the same time. After the initial charge up time (up to 72 hours), the unit will carry out a full duration test. After all initial tests are completed successfully the inbuilt processor will start the standard programmed test schedule, reporting failing functions via the status LED. In addition, it is also possible to initiate a manual test on self-test emergency lighting fittings for extra peace of mind.

Monitoring results is straightforward. A single bicolour LED indicates the system status. A green LED on constant with a pulse once every minute shows that the micro-processor is active and functioning. A flashing red LED identifies a fault condition is present. If a fault is resolved the LED indicator will return to green.

The following LED statuses apply to ESP’s Duceri self-test fittings:

LED Colour

The partnership will benefit end users and stockists, including builders’ merchants, plumbers’ merchants and electrical wholesalers and is designed to make it as easy as possible to source KNIPEX products, increase product availability and speed up the delivery of products to UK stockists.

Since the UK left the European Union, the supplying of products from the KNIPEX production facility in Wuppertal, Germany, has become increasingly challenging and customers have been suffering from imposed import handling charges and longer transit times.

“This will now change,” explained Alex Neite, International Sales Manager. “Thanks to our partnership with Tarlu Ltd., KNIPEX will be able to offer relief from the administrative burden and will start supplying its network of stockists with a wider range of products delivered within just a few days, making planning and stock management a lot easier.” In line with KNIPEX’s dual channel distribution policy, the company will, in tandem, further strengthen the cooperation with its distribution partners through even stronger and more focused sales and marketing support, to offer highest sourcing flexibility and maximum market coverage.

“This investment and strategic positioning will allow us to service the growing demand for KNIPEX products and it will significantly increase the availability of an unrivalled range of innovative products to end-users in many different industries across the UK,” continued Alex. “For our customers, the ordering process will not change, and orders will still be placed with and confirmed by KNIPEX-Werk in Germany. If any of our stockists have any questions, please get in touch with your area sales manager who will be happy to help you.”

And if you’re the adventurous type, you may also know there’s some fun to be had at the top in the form of three hair-raising amusement rides. But now there’s a fourth.

Claiming the title of the world’s highest commercial decelerated descent, the SkyJump takes thrill-seekers on an 855-foot ‘controlled free-fall’ at 40mph – think base jumping, but with a safety wire.

Queuing up for his safety lesson, suited up and hooked-up to a patented ‘descender machine’ before taking a leap this 29th of February off the small platform, will be Nigel Davis, a company merchandiser from the Telford-based Luceco Group.

Nigel, based at the group’s central office and distribution site on Stafford Park, will be the first employee to hit the fundraising trail to help raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support, the charity chosen by employees recently at the global electrical, lighting and power business.

Nigel said, “The SkyJump, a cross between a bungee jump and a zip line, has become the premiere attraction among the thrill rides offered at the Stratosphere. From jump to landing, it takes about 17 seconds, with two terrifying seconds of free fall at the start.

“When I announced I was off to Vegas, and considering doing the jump, we had just chosen our charity of the year and it made perfect sense to do the jump to raise money for Macmillan.

“So, I’m looking forward to being whisked by elevator to the observation deck on the 108th floor of the Stratosphere Tower and jumping off, but not until I have raised a few pennies in the process.”

Darren Binns, National Sales Manager for Jefferson Tools, looks at why it is worth seeking out a ‘pro’ brand to save you money, time and aggravation in the long run.

The choice between professional and DIY tools can be a decision with far-reaching consequences. While cost can be a pivotal factor, the allure of ‘pro’ tools goes way beyond the initial expense – their many advantages can elevate these top-tier tools to a league of their own.

One of the most common arguments against professional tools is their higher initial cost compared to DIY alternatives. It’s true that professional tools often come with a heftier price tag and at first glance this can be a stumbling block for budget-conscious individuals. But while the upfront cost of professional tools may be higher, their longevity and performance can more than justify the investment. High-quality, professional tools are built to withstand the rigours of regular use, making them more durable and less likely to require replacement or repair. On the other hand, DIY tools, often designed for occasional use, may wear out quickly and necessitate frequent replacements, adding up to significant costs over time.

Precision and efficiency

When it comes to precision and efficiency, professional tools shine brightly. Their design, construction and materials are engineered to meet exacting standards, ensuring accuracy and performance.

Tailored to meet the exacting demands of professionals, these tools ensure consistent, top-tier results. Whether it’s the surgical precision of a table saw or the unyielding torque of a socket wrench, professional-grade tools elevate accuracy and reliability to new heights. This not only translates to superior quality work but also slashes downtime by minimising the need for adjustments and callbacks, ultimately supercharging productivity.

Durability and trust

A common frustration with DIY tools is their susceptibility to wear and tear, potentially leading to breakdowns and replacements that interrupt projects and drain resources. Professional tools on the other hand, are built for resilience and long-term service. This reliability is a key element that distinguishes professional tools from their DIY counterparts.

Professionals often rely on their tools for their livelihoods which makes the consistency and dependability of professional-grade tools paramount. Downtime can be a significant cost for professionals, but quality control measures, rigorous testing and robust manufacturing standards ensure that professional tools are dependable, helping to prevent delays in project completion which can result from tool malfunctions or breakdowns.

Top-tier pro tool manufacturers prioritise customer satisfaction, evident in their robust warranties and accessible support. This assurance not only instils confidence but also proves cost-effective over time. With reliable warranty coverage and responsive support, the expense of repairs and replacements dwindle, amplifying the overall worth of professional-grade tools.

Safety

Safety should never be compromised when it comes to tools, and pro tools offer several advantages in this regard.

Households are increasingly asking electricians for quiet fans so that they can enjoy a peaceful home environment. Silent fans are therefore a great opportunity for wholesalers to upsell and provide electricians with the quiet fans they need. However, with many low noise fans now on the market, how can wholesalers advise installers on how to select the right fan for the job and pick a fan that really is low noise? Lena Hebestreit, Marketing Manager at Vent-Axia, explains more.

Silence sells… In increasingly busy times households are looking for a peaceful home environment to relax in. As a result, demand for quieter products in the home is still on the rise. According to a recent National Noise Report from Quiet Mark, 82% of adults surveyed said it matters how loud an appliance is when buying a product, something for electrical wholesalers to consider. The Quiet Mark National Noise Report 2023 also revealed that 84% of respondents said it is important to have quiet time to recharge themselves and what better place to recharge than an oasis of calm in a peaceful bathroom.

It is true that eliminating the damaging and unhealthy effects of condensation and mould is an essential role of bathroom ventilation, but this alone is no longer enough. Households want to be able to take a relaxing bath or shower without the constant drone of a noisy fan. Quiet fans are therefore becoming an increasingly popular fan to stock for wholesalers.

Choosing a quiet fan

However, with a wide range of low noise fans now on the market the question is what features should wholesalers look out for when deciding which silent fans to stock on their shelves? There are many fans on the market that claim to be quiet but what actually is quiet when it comes to fan noise?

A good place to start when selecting which quiet fans to stock is to check the sound level in decibels [dB(A)]. An average extract fan operates at 35dB(A). This is loud in a confined space. Fortunately, there are now fans on the market that are only slightly louder than the sound of a pin dropping. For example, Vent-Axia uses its own sound laboratory to ensure the fans it designs are exceptionally quiet with its Silent Fan range offering ultra-low sounds levels of just 12dB(A), quieter than a whisper. Meanwhile the Vent-Axia Lo-Carbon Svara runs at only 17dB(A) on low trickle and the Vent-Axia PureAir Sense offers silent continuous operation at just 19dB(A).

The Silent Fan and the Svara have both been awarded a Quiet Mark, the independent global certification programme associated with the UK Noise Abatement Society charitable foundation, which recognises the quietest solutions to unwanted noise. Third-party accreditation like this is a useful selling tool for wholesalers. To check whether a quiet fan has a Quiet Mark award wholesalers can visit the online directory at www.quietmark.com.

Reducing sound levels

There are other ways of reducing sound levels too. When recommending fans to customers, ensure the fan fits the needs of the room, do not oversize a fan. The more powerful a fan, potentially the noisier it will be. Select fans with high efficiency motors since the ball bearing technology used in them offers smoother and therefore quieter performance. They will also last longer, meaning the fan won’t become noisier over time. Meanwhile, variable speed models make installation simple since electricians can easily adjust the speed depending on the individual needs of the project, ensuring the right fan every time. This is especially helpful with long duct runs since the fan can be altered to achieve the required airflow. Usually more airflow means more noise, but fans like the Silent Fan stay quiet even with longer duct runs and higher air flow.

Other great features to reduce noise include clever light sensors that recognise room occupancy through light movement and shadows; a delay-on feature that can be set to avoid the fan being triggered in the night during quick bathroom visits; and fans that don’t trigger at ambient humidity changes in the night. Visual silence is also in demand so for customers preferring a silent aesthetic, the Vent-Axia Silent Fan now has a discrete tile like version while the PureAir Sense offers minimal styling, clean lines and an optional cover that complements any modern bathroom.

Indoor Air Quality

Silence is not the only comfort issue in demand. Households are now more aware than ever of the air they breathe because of Covid. This means consumer demand for fans that make a real difference to indoor air quality (IAQ) are an essential. Whilst many fans effectively improve IAQ, there are smart fans that offer app controllability for easy commissioning and to allow households to control their ventilation as well as a host of other clever features. For example, an innovative app available with the Svara and PureAir Sense allows households to control their ventilation from the comfort of their sofa unlocking a whole range of different functions to control their home’s IAQ, such as a silent scheduling and automatic cycles, offering flexible ventilation to suit a household’s lifestyle. Furthermore, the PureAir Sense deploys Odour Sense Technology. Designed to improve IAQ, the fan increases airflow when the sensor detects when air in a home is poor, creating a comfortable living environment.

As our lives become more frenetic the desire for a calm healthy home environment is only going to grow. Wholesalers who stock fans which offer silent operation as well as additional features such as odour sense technology, app control, variable speed options and intelligent sensors can be sure that they have the right solution for their customers every time.
