Designed for use in retail and commercial applications, the LED high bay delivers 150lm/W efficiency and features an etched diffuser for glare-free illumination.

The Opti-Lux Pro is power selectable from 60W to 200W and colour selectable between 3000K and 4000K, offering a range of output and temperature options for warehouse and retail units requiring reliable, high-quality lighting.

Developed to give installers greater flexibility and speed up projects, Opti-Lux Pro features a quick access gear tray with push fit connectors and is supplied with both a suspension kit and surface bracket.

A stand-out feature is the inclusion of a Zhaga socket allowing plug and play sensors including MWS, PIR and Casambi wireless control to be used with the product. This allows for easy senor changes, while the adjustable detection range and hold time enables customised lighting control and energy efficiency.

Ansell Lighting has continued its support for St. Rocco’s Hospice in Warrington with the creation of a feature lighting wall for a new relaxation room.

St. Rocco’s was Warrington-headquartered Ansell’s charity of the year in 2025, with the business raising more than £1,200. The lighting specialist offered to support with the new relaxation facility, which is now benefitting patients and loved ones who use St. Rocco’s.

Ansell created and installed the feature wall board using its LED Cell strip lighting range. The lighting has a remote control so colours and relaxing scenes can be adjusted according to the needs of the individual patients.

To create a tranquil and relaxing space the room also includes recliner chairs, salt lamps, throws, a music player and blackout blinds and is used for therapies including reflexology, hand and head massage, group therapy sessions and relaxation classes.

Gemma Sheerin, Marketing and Communications Manager at St Rocco’s, said: “The lighting feature wall has brought another dimension to our relaxation room. Using the lights we are able to provide a calm and soothing environment for our patients. The lights help to induce a feeling of relaxation for our patients as soon as they enter the room. Ansell Lighting has taken its support partnership with Warrington & Vale Royal College to the next level, by challenging students with real-life projects, designed to enhance learning, develop practical skills and support future careers.

The tasks set by Ansell’s Lighting Design Manager, Ken Chua, required the students to create lighting schemes for different environments using Relux – an application used by manufacturers to establish the number and placement of light fittings in a space.

Students currently undertaking the Level 1 City and Guild certification in Electrical Installation, worked collaboratively to design a lighting scheme for a sports hall. The assessment considered the placement of light fittings, and emergency fitments, as well as their ability to factor in sustainability – such as the replacement of old halogens with energy efficient LEDs.

Level 3 students working towards the Advanced Technical Diploma in Electrical Installation were tasked with creating a lighting scheme for a large open office space, which featured additional rooms such as a reception, canteen and toilets. Their work will be assessed based on their research of appropriate lighting levels and will contribute to their final qualification.

Nick Gwilliam, Lighting Designer at Ansell Lighting, shares his insights on how to approach outdoor lighting schemes effectively and explores the benefits of integrating the latest smart and solar-powered innovations.

Summer is finally on the horizon and outdoor lighting projects are high on the agenda for many. But they can be complex, requiring solutions for garden and social spaces, alongside safety and security requirements – and all with an eye on design as well.

Different roles

Whether it is for a home, garden, business premises – or a combination of the three – outdoor lighting is about so much more than security lights.

Lighting plays a multitude of roles, enhancing visibility during hours of darkness, ensuring safety and security around building perimeters and public access areas, deterring criminals, and enriching the ambience and visual appeal of buildings, gardens, features and outdoor spaces.

Planning an outdoor lighting project therefore goes beyond simply choosing a fitting and a place to install it. Considerations include product styling and durability; CCT and brightness settings; positioning, mounting heights and spacing; and, of course, issues such as light pollution avoidance.

The best starting point for an outdoor lighting project is to look at the spaces that require illumination and consider how each area will be used. Is lighting needed to enhance user safety or provide security? Is ambience important? Will the space be used for leisure or just access purposes? Is visual impact important? Is constant illumination required?

Defining the purpose of the lighting required will help to guide both the design and product specification. And combining all of the required elements takes some careful planning.

Product types

Product specification is key, which is where a knowledgeable wholesaler comes into their own. Different areas require different types of products. For example, wall-mounted luminaires are ideal for building façades and wall areas; floodlights for car parks and large open spaces and bollards are ideal for pathways or landscaped zones.

And due to their very nature, luminaires for outdoor and exterior building use need to be robust, with a high IP and IK rating. Those that are constructed from materials such as die-cast aluminium, polycarbonate or stainless-steel will offer the best performance against the elements for longevity.

In garden settings, whether that is residential or public realm, the most effective schemes usually incorporate a variety of lighting techniques, to add depth and bring life to the spaces.

Uplighting creates a dramatic effect, perfect for drawing attention to trees, sculptures or water features. Downlighting, which mimics moonlight, is ideal for softly illuminating paths, patios or doorways. Silhouetting involves placing light sources behind plants or objects to emphasise shape and structure, creating a striking artistic effect.

Other techniques like wall washing and grazing can highlight textured surfaces and materials, while cross-lighting and mirroring enhance depth and dimension. Together, these approaches ensure a dynamic and visually interesting space after dark.

Avoiding light pollution is a major consideration when designing an outdoor lighting installation and must not be overlooked. Clever placement, low level lighting and the specification of fittings that hold the Dark Sky Fixture Seal of Approval accreditation, are all recommended, helping to keep light spill to a minimum. The Dark Sky certification is only given to products that are fully shielded and emit minimal amounts of blue light and glare in the nighttime environment. Where this is not possible, luminaires with optics that combine advanced lens technology and enhanced glare control designs should be selected. The key objective is to ensure the minimal amount of light is given off upwards or sideways.

A huge part of product specification is, now more than ever, energy efficiency. Outdoor lighting can be left on for many hours – especially during winter months – meaning electricians and installers are under increasing pressure to deliver lighting that is energy efficient and cost effective to operate.

Opportunity

For wholesalers, this presents a key opportunity to add value and support to customers, by providing a comprehensive range of high-efficiency lighting solutions that work alongside LED fittings, to help reduce consumption and meet sustainability targets.

A great place to start is with motion sensors which ensure lighting is only in use when a space is occupied. Typically, there are two main types of motion sensor technology in use: Microwave and Passive Infra-Red (PIR).

Smart technology is another game-changer in terms of energy-efficiency. Allowing users to control, customise and automate lighting to an exceptional degree, connected lighting solutions help to optimise energy use and enhance functionality. They are great for domestic and commercial projects alike where lighting can be scheduled to operate only when areas are in use or programmed to activate at specific times as required.

And, connected lighting, is perfect to enhance design and ambience in social areas, with its adjustable settings allowing users to select different colours and colour temperatures to transform the look and feel of a space. Whether it’s a warm, welcoming white tone or a decorative colour for seasonal events, smart technology allows users to create a custom environment.

Solar power

Solar lighting is also worthy of consideration because of what it is able to deliver in terms of cost effectiveness and, increasingly, in performance. Significant advances in the technology has resulted in more efficient solar panels, improved LED function and better battery storage capabilities, so solar-powered lighting is now a reliable and high-performing choice, even in the UK’s less predictable climate. And as a result, the selection of solar lighting products now available has also increased.

Solar is of course completely free to operate and doesn’t add to household or business running costs, but the other huge bonus is quick and straightforward installation, with no need for disruptive outdoor cabling or electrical wiring work, and the flexibility to more easily move the fittings.

There are a myriad of factors to consider with outdoor lighting projects, but achieving an effective installation is easily achievable if time if dedicated, up front, to planning, design and product selection.

Although it has been around for the best part of 25 years, it is only more recently that LED strip lighting has become a mainstream lighting solution. Previously the mainstay of experienced designers, the rise of social media and its increasing emphasis on aesthetics and interior design have thrown strip lighting to the fore.

Versatility

Popular in homes, hospitality and retail spaces alike, LED strip lighting is a versatile lighting option that can be used in an array of different spaces. From illuminating shelving units and wardrobe interiors to ceiling alcoves and other structural features, strip lighting can be used almost anywhere and to create a variety of effects.

With demand surging and end users increasingly aware of its benefits, strip lighting represents a valuable revenue opportunity for wholesalers. To capitalise on this, wholesalers should carefully consider the compilation of their ranges, offering a diverse selection of strip lighting products that appeal to different applications and demands.

Seamless, dot free COB strips are ideal for spaces where LED strips may be visible such as shopfitting and under cabinet lighting or reflective spaces where a lot of light may bounce back. Stocking a good selection of these will ensure all types of projects are catered for.

Another factor wholesalers should consider is ensuring they offer LED strips with smart functionality. Appealing to installers working on both smart lighting projects and more standard installations, smart strips offer users complete control and automation over their lighting use and settings and are extremely popular with homeowners and commercial clients alike. Lights can be programmed to operate at specific times of day and at specified colour and brightness levels for a sophisticated and customised experience – all with a simple voice command or with the use of an app.

Wholesalers will also need to carry a comprehensive selection of LED strip accessories to ensure compatibility and ease of installation. These include a variety of LED drivers – the suitability of which will depend on whether dimming is required and whether the product is being used indoors or outdoors and at what voltage; controllers, pre-wired connectors, flexible connectors and straight connectors. Aluminium profiles are also essential. These are used where strip lighting may be more visible for a more professional aesthetic. Different profiles are needed depending on application and those commonly available include plaster in, suspended, cove, step edge, recessed and surface.  Compatible motion sensors are also popular accessories, used inside cupboards and wardrobes to ensure lights come on when doors open.

As with all products, when it comes to sales generation wholesalers should ensure that staff are well educated on the LED strip lighting products they sell, their differences and suitability for specific applications.

Specific product factors staff will need to be aware of include SDCM, which refers to standard deviation colour matching – this measures the closeness of colour between LEDs on a printed circuit board. The lower the value, the closer the colour consistency will be.

Copper PCB weight is another term staff should understand and refers to the thickness of the copper used in the printed circuit board. The higher the weight, the better the performance of the strip.

LED pitch refers to the distance between the LED chips on the printed circuit board. The closer the distance the smoother and more seamless the light distribution will appear.

Installation

One of the major benefits of strip lighting is that it is also incredibly easy to install and set up – something that staff should be quick to highlight to wholesale customers during the sales process. Most LED strip lights have an adhesive backing, allowing them to be mounted instantly and directly onto clean, dry surfaces without the need for brackets or screws. If the positioning of the strip makes it more visible, strips can also be easily set in aluminium extrusion profiles for a more professional aesthetic. Once in place, the strip is cut to length at marked intervals and connected using plug-and-play connectors or soldered joins, depending on the system. They are then ready to use.

Whether it’s a new-fit or refurbishment project, LED strip lights are an incredibly popular lighting option and the market is showing no signs of slowing down. Valued at $4.4billion globally in 2023, it is projected to almost triple in size by 2031 to $12billion. With such huge potential for growth and revenue generation, wholesalers should ensure they are stocking a well-curated and up-to-date range to meet rising demand across both commercial and residential sectors.
