Mike Collins, Managing Director of Ovia Lighting, provides some valuable information for wholesalers on the subject of floodlights to help them make the most of this lighting product category.
Floodlights are a crucial component in the lighting industry, providing powerful illumination for a variety of applications, including security, sports and commercial spaces. For electrical wholesalers, understanding the key features, benefits and market demands for floodlights can help meet the needs of a diverse customer base and maximise sales opportunities.
Types of floodlights
- LED floodlights – energy efficient, long-lasting, and environmentally friendly, they are a popular choice for contractors and end users.
- Solar floodlights – ideal for off-grid areas, they are powered by solar panels and are an excellent sustainable option.
Key features to consider
- Lumens output: Determines the brightness level – the higher the lumens the more powerful the light output.
- Beam angle: Wider angles cover larger areas, while narrower angles focus light more precisely.
- IP rating: Ensures protection against dust and water, a crucial consideration for outdoor applications.
- Motion sensors: Enhances security by activating lights only when movement is detected. Dimming capabilities: Offers adjustable brightness levels for energy efficiency and versatility.
- Colour temperature: Ranges from warm white to daylight, affecting the ambiance of the illuminated space.
- Photocells: Measure ambient light levels using photoresistors or photodiodes. Lights automatically turn on when surrounding light falls below a preset threshold (e.g., at dusk) and switch off when sufficient daylight is present (e.g., at dawn).
Benefits
Stocking high-quality floodlights can offer several benefits, including increased customer satisfaction, higher profit margins and a wider range of products to offer, especially as demand for energy efficient LED floodlights continues to grow. High-quality floodlights, particularly LED models, are known for their longevity and resistance to harsh outdoor conditions, leading to fewer returns and customer complaints. With a range of wattages, beam angles and colour temperatures, wholesalers can cater to a wider range of customer needs, from security lighting to sports field illumination.
A flood of light
Ovia’s extensive floodlighting collection provides contractors, designers and specifiers with a range of powerful and energy efficient floodlights that are suitable for a wide variety of projects and environmental conditions. Included in the comprehensive line-up are IK10-rated outdoor wall packs, asymmetric floodlights with photocell, robust metal floodlights, IP66 street lighting and solar powered LED floodlights.
Frameless floodlights
The most recent addition to Ovia’s floodlight range is the Sentro – a range of IP65-rated frameless LED floodlights designed to thrive in the most demanding environments. The frameless design allows edge-to-edge lighting making the Sentro a stylish and contemporary lighting choice.
An ideal solution for lighting large outdoor areas, these versatile luminaires are supplied in a black finish as standard and they are available in a variety of wattages – 10W, 20W, 30W and 50W – in standard or PIR variants. A choice of warm white or cool white colour temperature options is also available with all wattages.
Sentro is the first frameless IP65-rated floodlight that offers a PIR version. The PIR version has a 120° PIR detection angle and an 8m detection range and features an override function. The luminaires are supplied pre-fitted with 1m of cable and they come with an adjustable and angled bracket for installer convenience.
The power of the sun
With businesses and homeowners continuing to deal with the dual challenge of high-energy prices and environment pressures, Ovia is pleased to offer a range of solar power lighting solutions. The Zontor solar powered LED streetlight is a powerful 40W or 15W solar panel with advanced LED technology, resulting in an outstanding lumen output (4,800 lumen on the 40W model and 1,600 lumen for the 14W model.) It features a slim and modern patent design, and the light can be adjusted.
The Zonne solar LED security floodlight has a radiant 8W output, casting a crisp 4000k temperature glow at an impressive 950 lumens. IP65 rated, it is equipped with an adaptable solar panel that can be easily adjusted. As a very handy, additional feature, the Zonne fitting can be disconnected and used as a torch.
