In 2025, the Electrical Industries Charity celebrated 120 years of supporting our industry. To commemorate this milestone, the charity set a bold challenge: to raise an additional £120,000. In early November that target was smashed and an impressive £130,000 has now been raised.

To mark 120 years, EIC launched the 120 Challenge Calendar, inviting the community to take part from home and show their support in creative ways. The very first challenge was to “bail out” trustees and the EIC management team, who spent the day locked up in a makeshift jail in the middle of nowhere. Thankfully, the community banded together to bail them out and kick-start the 120th year celebrations with a bang.

Managing Director, Jess, led the charge throughout 2025, taking on a series of incredible fundraising challenges. Her mission was to rally 1,000 supporters from across the UK to each raise £120 for the Electrical Industries Charity — all while experiencing new thrills and overcoming personal challenges along the way.

In honour of the four nations we serve, Jess completed one challenge in each country:

Wales (March): Jess began her journey by ziplining over Penrhyn Quarry. This combined with the efforts of the Jail or Bail challenge raised an impressive £15,000 towards the total.

Scotland (April): She and a team of supporters took on the Glasgow Kiltwalk, boosting the total to £21,000 in the process.

England (July): Jess and a growing team of supporters walked over 20 miles in the Thames River Path Challenge, bringing the tally to £50,000

Northern Ireland (October): The final challenge saw Jess and her supporters abseil from Belfast’s iconic Europa Hotel. The total was now at £109,000.

A Community Effort

Throughout the year, the community truly went above and beyond. Supporters took on bungee jumps, cycled 55 miles, skydived from 14,000ft, completed triathlons, ran marathons, baked cakes, dressed up, and so much more — all in the name of raising vital funds for the charity.

Reflecting on this massive success, Jess says she was inspired to see the community come together for a good cause. “It’s been an absolute pleasure completing the #JoinJess challenged this year. Seeing the community rally together with the shared goal of raising vital funds for our charity was truly something special.

“Now that we’ve achieved this milestone, it’s important that we look to the future and keep the momentum going so that the EIC can continue to offer vital support to our community for another 120 years and beyond.”

David Pownall, Vice President of Power Systems for Schneider Electric UK & Ireland, has seen first-hand how vital community, innovation, and compassion are to the industry’s success. As a trustee for the Electrical Industries Charity (EIC), he’s committed to helping the charity stay relevant and resilient as it enters its next era of support.

David had known about the EIC for much of his career but became more involved after joining Schneider Electric six years ago. “I’d known about the charity for years,” he says, “but it was really through Schneider that I began to understand the scale and impact of the EIC’s work.”

Through Schneider’s wellbeing initiatives and the EIC’s mental health and training support, David saw the charity’s work in action. “It just connected,” he says. “What Schneider stands for and what the EIC delivers overlap in a really meaningful way.”

Building a more connected industry

For David, one of the most powerful aspects of the EIC’s work is how it brings together such a wide and varied industry. “This industry is incredibly diverse,” he explains. “If you look at utilities or generation, you’ve got more structure, but then you move into this network of independent contractors, self-employed people, and small firms – thousands and thousands of them. What the EIC does is create a sense of connection across all of that in a way that hasn’t happened before.”

He believes this sense of unity is essential for the future. “If we’re going to do more to look after each other and build something that’s more than just a trade, then that’s where I see the EIC as being really important.”

Celebrating milestones

To celebrate 120 years of the EIC, David has been helping to raise awareness within Schneider Electric and across the wider industry. From promoting the anniversary across internal communications to taking part in fundraising events, his enthusiasm for the cause is clear. “Jess put me in prison for a day,” he laughs. “It was absolutely freezing, and she didn’t let me out until I’d raised enough money to secure my bail. But it was great fun and a brilliant way to start the year, and we raised a fantastic amount for the charity.”

Looking ahead

As a trustee, David’s focus is firmly on the future. “For me, the question is: how do we make sure the EIC is still relevant in another 20 years – and in another 120 years?” he says. “The world is changing. It’s digitising, electrifying, and moving away from fossil fuels. That’s creating new opportunities but also challenges for people in our industry. Jobs are shifting, new skills are needed, and we’ve got to make sure the charity keeps adapting to that.”

David is particularly passionate about engaging younger generations and supporting apprentices as they enter the sector. “There’s a huge number of people who’ll retire in the next decade,” he explains. “We’ve got to make sure we’re attracting the next set of people who’ll carry the EIC forward. Unless people understand the value of charity and are prepared to invest their time, our future isn’t secure. That’s why I love the work around apprentices and the Emerging Professionals Board. It’s about planting that seed early and showing people why this matters.”

A collaborative vision

One of the aspects David enjoys most about being a trustee is the opportunity to work with peers from across the sector. “You spend your life in your own bubble. I live in the Schneider bubble, others are in their own,” he says. “But when you come together as trustees, you get this mix of perspectives from every corner of the industry. Everyone’s looking at the same issues through a different lens. It’s fascinating, and I’ve learned a lot from it.”

Life isn’t always predictable. One moment, things may be ticking along as normal and the next, you could be facing personal challenges that feel overwhelming. In the electrical industry, where long hours, demanding environments, and physical work are often part of the job, it can be especially difficult to pause, take a breath, and ask: ‘How am I really doing?’

At the Electrical Industries Charity (EIC), we hear from people every day who are navigating pressures, both at work and at home. Some are facing financial hardship or health concerns. Others are dealing with bereavement, relationship breakdowns, caring responsibilities, or mental health struggles. Many tell us the same thing: “I didn’t know if I could ask for help.”

We want to make it clear: you can. And you should. Asking for support isn’t a last resort or a sign of weakness. It’s one of the most important steps you can take to look after yourself, and in turn, those around you.

It’s important to understand that resilience doesn’t mean going it alone. It means knowing when to take a step back, seek guidance, and give yourself the same care you offer others.

Challenges are an inevitable part of life, but support should be too.

It’s natural to experience ups and downs. But too often, people in our industry push through in silence. There’s a deep-rooted culture of being “the one others rely on”, the fixer, the provider, the problem-solver. While these traits are valuable, they can sometimes prevent us from reaching out when we need help.

It’s important to understand that resilience doesn’t mean going it alone. It means knowing when to take a step back, seek guidance, and give yourself the same care you offer others.

Practical ways to navigate difficult times

If you’re currently going through a tough period, or supporting someone who is, here are a few simple but effective ways to begin working through challenges, one step at a time:

Start by talking

Opening up to someone can ease feelings of isolation and offer a fresh perspective. It could be a colleague, a friend, a family member or a trained professional. The first conversation is often the hardest, but it can be the beginning of real change.

Set small, manageable goals

When everything feels like too much, try breaking things down. Focus on one task at a time. Even small wins like making a call, attending an appointment, or getting outside for a walk can help you feel more in control.

Be gentle with yourself

When we’re struggling, it’s easy to become self-critical. Remember, you are doing your best with the resources you have right now. Give yourself permission to rest, to ask for help, and to take things at your own pace.

Take care of the basics

Sleep, nutrition, hydration, and movement may seem simple but they are often the first things to slip when life gets tough. Try to maintain regular routines where possible. They act as anchors when everything else feels uncertain.

Use the support available to you

You are not alone. The Electrical Industries Charity offers free, confidential support to anyone working in the electrical or energy sectors and their families. Whether it’s financial assistance, counselling, legal guidance, or wellbeing resources, help is just a phone call or email away.

Wellbeing matters

You might be used to being the one who fixes problems for others. But even the strongest people need someone to lean on now and again. That’s why we’re here.

At EIC, we believe that everyone deserves the chance to thrive, not just survive. Whether you need immediate help or simply someone to talk to, please don’t hesitate to reach out. You don’t have to wait for things to get worse. The earlier you speak up, the sooner support can begin.

If you or someone you know in the electrical industries needs support: practical, emotional, or financial, contact the Electrical Industries Charity today. It’s okay to ask for help. In fact, it might be the most powerful step you take.

Fred Hood, a dedicated volunteer with the Electrical Industries Charity (EIC), has exemplified a profound commitment to service spanning over six years. His journey, rooted in a longstanding appreciation for the organisation’s mission, reflects both personal growth and a steadfast dedication to fostering change within the charity.

Fred’s involvement with the EIC began informally, attending events for decades before officially joining as a volunteer. As part of a small committee in his local region, Fred plays a pivotal role alongside Chairman Fred Dickinson. His role extends beyond conventional responsibilities, advocating for innovation and inclusivity within the committee structure.

Driving innovation

Recognising the importance of evolution, Fred actively promotes change within the committee. Despite initial resistance, his efforts have introduced new venues and event concepts, rejuvenating interest and participation among members. His approach underscores the value of embracing diversity and adapting to contemporary challenges.

Future initiatives

Fred’s enthusiasm for events within his region, such as the summer lunch event and the upcoming Christmas lunch, highlights his ongoing commitment to creating meaningful experiences within the community. The summer lunch was an enormous success, hosted in a brand new venue it was a brilliant networking opportunity. Looking ahead he is gearing up for the well-established Tyne & Wear Christmas lunch and getting as many people there as possible to support the charity.

Personal rewards and reflections

Reflecting on his tenure, Fred finds immense satisfaction in giving back to an industry that has shaped his professional journey. His role as an elder statesperson within the charity reflects a deep-rooted appreciation for past support received, now channelled into meaningful contributions that benefit future generations.

Advice for prospective volunteers

Fred’s advice to prospective volunteers emphasises the importance of commitment and active participation. Stressing the need for dedicated involvement, he encourages newcomers to prioritise attendance and engagement in committee activities, fostering a proactive approach to charity service.

Celebrating milestones

While Fred admits minimal involvement, so far, in celebrating the EIC’s 120th anniversary, his focus remains steadfast on personal endeavours, notably supporting his daughter’s marathon training. His commitment to her cause symbolises a generational transfer of dedication, embodying the spirit of familial support and community engagement.

Fred Hood’s journey with the Electrical Industries Charity exemplifies the transformative power of volunteerism. His story, marked by dedication, innovation and a commitment to future initiatives, serves as a testament to the enduring impact of charitable service within the electrical industry. As Fred continues to advocate for change and community support, his efforts illuminate the path for future volunteers, embodying the ethos of service and compassion at the heart of the EIC’s mission.

This month, we sat down with Elliot Tierney, a dedicated volunteer for the Electrical Industries Charity (EIC)

Elliot’s journey with the charity began with a challenge after he signed up for the Kilimanjaro “Challenge for a Cause” event in 2024. Since then, he’s become a passionate advocate for contractor engagement and joined the Emerging Professionals Board.

How it all began

“I first joined the EIC in 2024 when I signed up for the Kilimanjaro challenge,” Elliot explains. “That experience led me to want to do more, so I joined the Emerging Professionals Board.” As one of the few contractors on the board, Elliot sees his role as more than a seat at the table. “I feel it’s my responsibility to advocate for contractors and provide insight into how the EIC can better reach and support people in our part of the industry.”

A personal turning point

Elliot’s first contact with the charity came through regional events. “I used to attend as a guest of wholesalers or suppliers. I was always made to feel welcome, but there was often an expectation to overindulge. At the time, I didn’t have the self-control to say no.” Those experiences triggered some important reflection. “You saw the same behaviours across the contractor community. I realised I needed to make a change – and that I wanted to give back. I first heard about the Kilimanjaro challenge at one of those events, and that’s what set me on this path.”

Finding purpose through the EIC

Along the way, Elliot recognised how easy it can be to slip into unhealthy habits and how common that is in the trade. “I was one of ‘those’ people who was getting out of control. It’s so easy in our industry to think that this behaviour is normal. I want to help change that mindset – and I believe the EIC is key to making that happen.”

What resonates with Elliot most is the personal reassurance the charity offers. “Knowing the EIC is there not just for me, but for my family if anything ever happened – that really sticks with me.”

Ambitions for the future

“My personal goal is to get the word out to contractors,” Elliot says. “There are still so many who don’t know what the EIC does or how they can access help.”

Reflecting on standout memories, one moment comes to mind instantly. “Being part of the Kilimanjaro team. That was life-changing. It’s amazing to say I’m one of a very small group of people who’ve done it. We built a family. It showed me what the EIC is all about – community, connection and support.”

Elliot sees a bright future for the charity. “I see the EIC growing in its reach—especially among contractors. The addition of summer social events is helping make things more accessible and inclusive too.”

Breaking down barriers

When asked about barriers to access, Elliot is quick to point out that the only ones are self-imposed. “There are no real barriers to the EIC – just the ones we put up ourselves. People can call, fill in the web form or email directly. But pride gets in the way. Especially for contractors and especially for men – we don’t like to talk and that can stop us from getting help when we really need it.”

What’s next?

“I’m really excited to see the 120 year anniversary campaign come to life,” Elliot says. “There are some brilliant events coming up over the next few months as part of the 120 year campaign and upcoming challenge for a cause events in 2026… I can’t say too much yet, but keep an eye on the website!”

Advice for others

“If you’re thinking about getting involved with the EIC, do it,” Elliot urges. “It’s so rewarding to be part of something that gives back to our industry. The more involved you get, the more you realise the impact the EIC has—and how much more there is to do to raise awareness across the sector.”

The EIC is looking for help in raising awareness of its work and is encouraging volunteers to sign up as Charity Ambassadors.

The EIC’s aim is to ensure that the whole industry knows the support available to them. In these challenging times it believes there are more people suffering in silence than ever, which is why it needs you.

Volunteering as an EIC Ambassador offers personal fulfilment while supporting colleagues in need. Connect with industry peers, enhance your professional development, and make a meaningful impact in the community.

What is the EIC Ambassador Programme?

The EIC is here to lend a helping hand to anyone facing life’s challenges who work in the electrical or energy industry. The charity is looking for a minimum of two people per company and hope to get 20 Ambassadors.

What does an EIC Ambassador do?

Ambassadors raise awareness of the EIC. The Ambassadors will support the charity with various things, such as inspiring more people to fundraise, getting more people signed up for the powerLottery and encouraging a company to choose us as their ‘Charity of the Year’.

What do EIC Ambassadors commit to?

Ambassadors will commit as much time as they can to the role. In return, they will receive knowledge of the EIC’s vital work, resources, monthly newsletters and quarterly catch-up’s with the EIC team.

Ambassadors will be a community and will have access to a WhatsApp group where they can swap ideas and chat to fellow Ambassadors.

What’s in it for me?

Volunteers often tell of the sense of personal achievement they feel by helping their industries charity and in turn their colleagues and peers.

You will have the opportunity to meet new people across the industry, enhance your professional development and last but by no means least, you’ll be helping give your colleagues in need a helping hand.

Lots of us are finding ourselves struggling with the increase in our basic household bills, not to mention rents and mortgages. We’re seeing more and more people in the awful situation of not being able to pay bills, having to choose between putting the heating on or eating, and spiralling into debt because there just isn’t any more money.

Electrical Industries Charity (EIC) want to offer some practical advice to make sure you’re receiving all the help you should be and where you can go for extra support. We’ve loads of information on our website but here’s a snapshot of the key things you can do:

Don’t ignore it: Although it might feel like a way out, it’ll only make things worse and become a bigger problem.

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1551219974094-0'); });

Benefits check: Are you getting everything you’re entitled to? We work with an amazing Charity called Step Change and they have a range of tools that most of our clients use. Check out a free benefits calculator – www.gov.uk/benefits-calculators.

Know your priority debts: Council tax and rent/mortgage arrears are priority debts, meaning they need to be addressed to stop legal action or eviction. Make sure you have informed the relevant people if you’re behind and try to work out a payment plan. If you’re behind on your rent, you may qualify for the Breathing Space Scheme. This could give you up to 60 days respite from interest, fees, and court action.

Do a financial MOT: Go through all your incomings and outgoings and be honest about what’s essential. Is your car too expensive? How many takeaways a week are you having? Do you need every streaming subscription? These are the type of things that should be cut back before you miss a rent/mortgage payment. We’ve got a great budgeting tool that can help – www.citizensadvice.org.uk/debt-and-money/budgeting/budgeting/work-out-your-budget/

Gas and electricity bills: There’re lots of different schemes, grants, and government help for your fuel bills, we’ve highlighted the main ones below, but full details can be found here:

Energy Bill Support Scheme: All households should be receiving £400 in 6 instalments – check your energy bills! There are 3 additional Cost of Living Payments; £650 one-off Cost of Living Payment for those on means-tested benefits, a £300 one-off Pensioner Cost of Living Payment, for households that receive the Winter Fuel Payment, and a £150 Disability Cost of Living Payment.

Energy Supplier Grants: If you’re in debt with your Energy Suppliers they have grants available to help you pay the debt off. You can find out if you can apply for one of these grants on the Gov.UK website. The British Gas Energy Trust is open to anyone, not just British Gas customers, they may be able to help with gas or electricity arrears if you can’t get a grant from your current supplier.

Government Help: There are several Government schemes, including the Warm Home Discount Scheme. Depending on your situation, you may be able to get help, including Money back on council tax, Cold Weather Payment, Winter Fuel Payment, and a Boiler Upgrade Scheme

If you can’t afford to eat: The Household Support Fund, provided by local authorities, has been increased by £500 million and extended until March 2023. To find out more and apply, contact your local council. There are also food banks, which don’t just provide food, but also make sure people get essential household items. The largest food bank organisation in the UK is our partner, the Trussell Trust, and we can refer you if you come to us for help. There are also lots of smaller, local groups running foodbanks, that can usually be found on social media.

We know that financial worries can have a massive impact on your mental health. If you’re feeling isolated, anxious, or depressed, counselling can really help with this, and the Charity is able to fund some sessions for you to get support with your mental health.
