In this month’s Face to Face we speak with Robert Stuart-Walker, EVCP NPD Manager at Sync Energy, and find out more about the future of the EV market.

How and when was Sync Energy established?

Sync Energy began life as Sync EV, which was founded in 2009 with a very clear focus on practical, installer-friendly solutions. In 2022, the business was acquired by Luceco Group, which marked a real turning point for the brand. That acquisition brought broader engineering, compliance and manufacturing capability, alongside long-established relationships across the electrical wholesale and contractor market.

In 2024, the brand evolved from Sync EV into Sync Energy. That change was about more than just a new name. It reflected a wider ambition. EV charging was no longer seen as a standalone product, but as part of a connected home energy system that can include inverters, battery storage, solar power diverters, smart apps and smart tariff integration.

Throughout those transitions, one thing has remained consistent, putting installers first. Every product decision is driven by how easy it is to install, set up and hand over. That runs from intuitive wiring layouts and flexible mounting options through to clear commissioning steps and an app that installers can confidently walk customers through at the end of a job.

The goal has always been to make installations simpler, reduce call-backs, and help installers deliver a better overall experience for their customers.

How do you see the future of the EV charging market?

The market is moving quickly from “can I charge at home?” to “how do I charge smarter?”. Hardware will always matter, but software, connectivity and energy awareness are becoming just as important.

Looking ahead, EV chargers will increasingly sit alongside home energy management systems and need to interact with smart tariffs. The challenge is making those systems work together without adding complexity for installers.

EV chargers are becoming a critical part of grid stability locally and nationally to avoid spikes of grid power requiring less renewable energy sources.

Our approach is to offer a simple, connected solution where everything can be managed through one easy-to-use app. That avoids complex commissioning processes and the need for multiple apps to control home energy and EV charging.

What are some of the built-in features that are making EV chargers smarter and more powerful?

Connectivity is a big one. App-based control allows users to schedule charging, track energy usage and understand costs far more clearly. From our perspective, those features also need to be quick and straightforward for installers to set up and test before leaving site.

Tariff awareness, solar integration and smarter load management are becoming standard expectations, but we are careful to design them in a way that doesn’t overcomplicate installation or handover. If an installer can’t explain a feature in a couple of minutes, we see that as a design problem, not an installer problem.

What are some of the key considerations when selecting an EV charger for home or commercial use?

Reliability and compliance come first, particularly from an installer’s point of view. Contractors need confidence that a product will perform as expected and won’t lead to unnecessary call-backs.

Ease of installation is another major factor. Simple Wiring, flexible mounting options and a logical commissioning process make a real difference on site. For homeowners, usability is key, but that starts with how easily the installer can get everything set up in the first place.

In commercial settings, PAS accessibility compliance, scalability and monitoring become more important, but the same principle applies. If a system is easy for an installer to deploy and manage, it is usually easier for the end user too. 

What is the Flow Energy Management System?

Sync Energy Flow is our complete home energy management system, designed to give homeowners clear, intelligent control over how energy is generated, stored and used in the home. At its core, Flow brings together hybrid inverters, modular battery storage, EV charging and solar power diverters, all managed through the Sync Energy app.

When Scottish high-end alcohol label printing company, Spirit Label Solutions, moved into a new £5m warehouse, they asked local business Electrical Solutions to come up with a lighting scheme, and with the help of Luceco, they delivered the solution.

Starting from scratch in an empty warehouse, Luceco carried out a survey of the site to decide the best indoor, outdoor and emergency lighting for the space.

This warehouse had to double up as both a printing warehouse and an office space, so the lighting had to be suitable for both applications, as Chris Bryant, Group Managing Director of Electrical Solutions (Scotland) explained: “The brief we were given by our contractors, Advanced Building Contractors Ltd, was to supply a lighting scheme for a manufacturing space and a small office in the same warehouse. The client had limited knowledge of lighting, so working with Luceco we were able to recommend the appropriate lighting and fittings for the job.

“When we visited the site with Luceco, we carried out a survey and produced a lighting design to meet their requirements. One thing we knew we had to get right was the balance of natural lighting in the space. The warehouse featured big skylights, which in the day provided the best natural light that wasn’t too warm or cold. We needed to replicate the same natural light when it got darker as accurate colour rendering is essential for printing environments and so LED lighting was an ideal solution.”

LED lighting provides the perfect solution for industries that require the LG1 recommended Colour Rendering Index (CRI), as it has only a small oscillation in light output and eliminates the strobed effect often caused by traditional lamped luminaires.

Following the site survey and lighting design, Spirit Label Solutions chose to use Luceco’s Elara Bay, cost-effective LED luminaires ideal for high ceiling mounting positions in industrial and warehouse environments, and surface mounted LuxPanels for the office spaces.

In this month’s Face to Face we speak with Wayne Hill, Managing Director at Luceco Group, to find out more about the company’s current operations and future plans.

Q:What is the history behind the company and which brands fall under the Luceco Group banner?

Luceco Group, the market leader in key electrical categories, has a heritage that dates back 80 years, growing rapidly and consistently in recent years to encompass established brands including British General, Masterplug, Kingfisher Lighting, DW Windsor, Nexus, Ross, SyncEV, DLine and Luceco Lighting.

Q: With a vast array of fire-rated downlighters now on the market what should wholesalers focus on when considering products and solutions to stock? 

There are a number of key points for wholesalers to think about when it comes to fire-rated downlighters. Firstly, think great product design. With lots of different downlighters to choose from, stocking a range that is designed with the installer in mind is essential. Your customers are looking for a reliable product that makes their job quick and easy, allowing them to move onto their next installation whilst leaving a good impression. Space is always a challenge for wholesalers who want to ensure customers have access to as wide a product range as possible, whilst not over-stocking. Great supplier sales support and tailored merchandising options that suit your individual needs is essential. Wholesalers need suppliers who can support their product with eye-catching point-of-sale materials, merchandising units, demo kits for your sales team where required and on-the-ground support for your trade events and open days.

Q:What are Luceco and the wider lighting industry doing to improve sustainability? 

Luceco has been very much at the forefront of LED advancements, driving LED technology especially in the commercial space with sustainability being at the heart of our designs. One major step was to develop our own advanced lighting control application known as PLATFORM – enabling companies to benefit from smart, adjustable lighting all supported with an easy, intuitive app.

The lighting team are also working on improving Lumen per watt constantly, with many Luceco products offering the ultimate in Lumen efficiency.

Luceco has not always loudly boasted their environmental commitments, often they have just been done ‘as standard’, such as removing all plastics from the Luceco Lighting packaging and utilising recycled materials wherever possible.

As well as bringing out great product designs, Luceco is also working to improve sustainable products such as designing LEDs and drivers that can be more easily replaced – reducing landfill in the longer term as only the LED needs to be replaced and not the whole unit.

Hylec-APL has announced three key strategic appointments to its team.

First up, Nick Hart takes on a new role as Director of Wholesale. Returning to Hylec after a successful period working in the wholesale sector for a manufacturer of water-resistant electronics, Nick will take responsibility for driving the company’s wholesale business.

Next up, Steve McGrath joins as Northern Sales Manager for OEMs. Steve has enjoyed a successful career in the electronics and electrical industries across sales and product management roles and will utilise his experience to help support Hylec’s continued growth.

Finally, enhancing the sales support team, Hylec has appointed Franco Mattola as Supply Chain Manager, with a brief to strengthen UK stock commitment and communication on shipments.

Draper tools

New Head of Marketing Sarah Hartland, who previously held the position of Marketing Campaign Manager, will be the youngest member of Draper Tools’ senior leadership team at just 32 years old.

Having joined Draper Tools over four years ago, Sarah has been an integral part of the marketing team during that time, playing a crucial role in many of the company’s most successful product launches. Sarah also brings her a wealth of industry knowledge having previously held marketing roles at Elliotts Builders Merchants as well as gaining valuable experience at globally recognised PR firms.

Mark Grayson Wood
Carl kammerling international

Carl Kammerling International (CKI) has bolstered its senior team with the appointment of Mark Grayson Wood as Head of Marketing.

Mark will lead on the company’s full marketing mix, range management and brand development to drive sales and brand loyalty. Mark brings over 25 years’ experience to the position, having worked within industrial and technical commercial sales and marketing roles within major power, aerospace, oil and gas operators worldwide.
