Ansell Lighting has continued its support for St. Rocco’s Hospice in Warrington with the creation of a feature lighting wall for a new relaxation room.

St. Rocco’s was Warrington-headquartered Ansell’s charity of the year in 2025, with the business raising more than £1,200. The lighting specialist offered to support with the new relaxation facility, which is now benefitting patients and loved ones who use St. Rocco’s.

Ansell created and installed the feature wall board using its LED Cell strip lighting range. The lighting has a remote control so colours and relaxing scenes can be adjusted according to the needs of the individual patients.

To create a tranquil and relaxing space the room also includes recliner chairs, salt lamps, throws, a music player and blackout blinds and is used for therapies including reflexology, hand and head massage, group therapy sessions and relaxation classes.

Gemma Sheerin, Marketing and Communications Manager at St Rocco’s, said: “The lighting feature wall has brought another dimension to our relaxation room. Using the lights we are able to provide a calm and soothing environment for our patients. The lights help to induce a feeling of relaxation for our patients as soon as they enter the room. During treatments, the lights are also a gentle distraction to help calm the mind as the therapy sooths the body.”

Ansell Lighting has taken its support partnership with Warrington & Vale Royal College to the next level, by challenging students with real-life projects, designed to enhance learning, develop practical skills and support future careers.

The tasks set by Ansell’s Lighting Design Manager, Ken Chua, required the students to create lighting schemes for different environments using Relux – an application used by manufacturers to establish the number and placement of light fittings in a space.

Students currently undertaking the Level 1 City and Guild certification in Electrical Installation, worked collaboratively to design a lighting scheme for a sports hall. The assessment considered the placement of light fittings, and emergency fitments, as well as their ability to factor in sustainability – such as the replacement of old halogens with energy efficient LEDs.

Level 3 students working towards the Advanced Technical Diploma in Electrical Installation were tasked with creating a lighting scheme for a large open office space, which featured additional rooms such as a reception, canteen and toilets. Their work will be assessed based on their research of appropriate lighting levels and will contribute to their final qualification.

Mark Abbott, Managing Director at Ansell Lighting, said: “We have worked with the College extensively in recent years providing support and resources for electrical apprentices and full time students, as well as team members undertaking regular talks and presentations on the latest lighting technology and products, but this is the first time we have worked with them on a lighting project.

After previous work on a different floor of 2 West Regent Street in Glasgow, Luceco partnered with local contractors, Electrical Solutions (Scotland) Ltd, to provide a lighting design that met the brief of the consultant’s lighting requirements.

The biggest challenge that had to be faced was the unconventional luminaire cut-out size, measured at 1200x300mm. Chris Bryant, Group Managing Director of Electrical Solutions (Scotland), explained: “We needed to provide a cost-effective lighting solution to fit into a non-standard suspended ceiling, that resulted in a comfortable, well-lit commercial working space while also reducing future running costs.

“We had worked with Luceco on a previous floor in this building, so we knew that they would be able to help us find a solution.”

To fit the non-standard ceiling requirement, Grahame Scott, Luceco’s Project Manager, suggested using Luceco’s LuxPanel Extra lighting, a recessed panel fitting from the commercial range.

The LuxPanel Extra is a slimline backlit LED panel with TPa rated diffusers, long life drivers, and IP65 protected options. Backlit LED panels mount the modules to the back of the panel’s body, allowing for direct downward distribution from the modules themselves. Due to the direct light, there is no requirement for an LGP. This allows a backlit panel to offer increased performance in terms of lumen per watt and balanced light distribution.

Installation is achieved easily and efficiently with a plug and play ENEC approved loop in-out driver and rear safety wire suspension points.

Grahame Scott, Project Manager at Luceco, said: “We re-engineered our LuxPanel Extra luminaires to appropriately fit the Armstrong SAS330 ceiling they needed to fit in to. We then used our Platinum Downlighters around the perimeter of the space to compliment the lighting design and achieve the best look for the office space in West Regent Street.”

The brand’s highly efficient lighting solutions have played a critical role in ensuring the campus meets its high standards of energy efficiency, operational resilience, and environmental responsibility. 

A hub of innovation 

Kao Data leads the data centre industry with a focus on AI and advanced computing. Situated strategically between Cambridge and London, the 15-acre campus is built on the historical site of Sir Charles Kao’s groundbreaking discovery of fibre optic cable in 1966. With over £230 million investment, the campus houses four cutting-edge, carrier-neutral data centres designed to support an IT load of 40MW, all powered by 100% renewable energy. The campus, which can expand to accommodate an IT load of 83MW, is a testament to the UK’s position as a global leader in data infrastructure.

The lighting project

The lighting installation at the Kao Data centres was executed in multiple phases, starting with the KLON01 data centre project in 2019 and extending through to the KLON02 data centre and the ongoing KLON03 data centre projects. Each phase has been meticulously designed to align with Kao Data’s vision of a sustainable and technologically advanced environment. Zumtobel and Thorn, in collaboration with JCA Engineering and MEIT Consultants, provided a tailored lighting solution that not only enhances the visual appeal of the spaces but also contributes to the campus’s low Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.2 — a benchmark in energy efficiency.

Objectives

The primary objective of the project was to implement a lighting system that maximises energy efficiency while maintaining the high operational standards required by a data centre. Kao Data sought to integrate a solution that would provide optimum lighting for technical spaces, reduce energy consumption, and ensure long-term sustainability. Additionally, the project aimed to enhance the facility’s aesthetic quality, reflecting Kao Data’s innovative spirit.

The future-proof scheme

Zumtobel’s TECTON continuous-row luminaire system, the backbone of the scheme, was chosen for its superior performance, sustainability, and flexibility. TECTON is known for its long lifespan, excellent glare control, and high luminous efficacy, maintaining 95% of its efficacy even after ten years of continuous operation. Thorn Lighting’s Aquaforce Pro vapourproof battens complemented TECTON for back-of-house areas, ForceLED vapourproof battens for external gantries, Omega Pro 2 panels in the offices, and Chalice downlights in toilets and stairways.

The TECTON system’s modular design allowed for seamless integration of emergency lighting and sensors in the data halls, making it an ideal choice for a dynamic and future-proof environment like Kao Data. The lighting solution not only met but exceeded the stringent sustainability standards, contributing to the campus’s BREEAM ‘Excellent’ certification.

Results and benefits

The collaboration between Kao Data, JCA Engineering, MEIT Consultants, Zumtobel and Thorn has resulted in a lighting solution that optimally supports the data centre’s operations while significantly reducing energy consumption when compared to older and less efficient solutions. The use of Zumtobel’s TECTON system has ensured that the lighting is not only energy-efficient but sustainable as the system is reusable and can be upgraded through the lifetime of the product the project, making it highly adaptable to the changing needs of the data centre environment.

The efficiency benefits continue in the Thorn luminaires used in the white space areas. The project’s success is reflected in the campus’s recognition as one of the top business environments in East Anglia, as well as its ranking among the UK’s most advanced and sustainable data centres.

When Scottish high-end alcohol label printing company, Spirit Label Solutions, moved into a new £5m warehouse, they asked local business Electrical Solutions to come up with a lighting scheme, and with the help of Luceco, they delivered the solution.

Starting from scratch in an empty warehouse, Luceco carried out a survey of the site to decide the best indoor, outdoor and emergency lighting for the space.

This warehouse had to double up as both a printing warehouse and an office space, so the lighting had to be suitable for both applications, as Chris Bryant, Group Managing Director of Electrical Solutions (Scotland) explained: “The brief we were given by our contractors, Advanced Building Contractors Ltd, was to supply a lighting scheme for a manufacturing space and a small office in the same warehouse. The client had limited knowledge of lighting, so working with Luceco we were able to recommend the appropriate lighting and fittings for the job.

“When we visited the site with Luceco, we carried out a survey and produced a lighting design to meet their requirements. One thing we knew we had to get right was the balance of natural lighting in the space. The warehouse featured big skylights, which in the day provided the best natural light that wasn’t too warm or cold. We needed to replicate the same natural light when it got darker as accurate colour rendering is essential for printing environments and so LED lighting was an ideal solution.”

LED lighting provides the perfect solution for industries that require the LG1 recommended Colour Rendering Index (CRI), as it has only a small oscillation in light output and eliminates the strobed effect often caused by traditional lamped luminaires.

Following the site survey and lighting design, Spirit Label Solutions chose to use Luceco’s Elara Bay, cost-effective LED luminaires ideal for high ceiling mounting positions in industrial and warehouse environments, and surface mounted LuxPanels for the office spaces.

Chris said, “We chose to work with Luceco as we trusted them with their proposal and knew we were going to have their support throughout the entire project from planning and ordering to fitting and future repairs, and the client was delighted with the transformation.”

Integral LED recently moved to a new warehouse in Calverton, Nottingham to meet the needs of their expanding operations.

The facility was in need of a full lighting refurbishment and improved efficacy and longevity were a paramount concern.

Challenges and considerations

There were multiple challenges to overcome in finding suitable lighting solutions for the new scheme. Luminaires needed to be carefully selected to accommodate narrow racking aisles and multiple functional areas, thoughtfully curated to reduce glare and wasted light at high levels. All lighting needed to be hard-wearing and reliable reducing maintenance whilst significant thought was also given to control options and sensors to enhance efficiencies.

Optimising lighting

Within the general lighting scheme, a range of new highly efficient high bays luminaires was chosen for installation within the warehouse racking area and above the mezzanine. Chosen for its high IK10 impact resistance, in-built Zhaga 18 plug & play socket and models with differing lengths and beam angles, the Integral LED Vector Max Linear High Bay offers an exceptional efficacy of 180lm/W for its compact size.

0.6m 150W Vector Max luminaires were installed throughout the internal aisles whilst for the outer perimeter and the mezzanine level 0.3m 80W luminaires were installed, taking advantage of the upper level windows and available natural light. All Vector Max luminaires installed featured an asymmetrical 30×70° beam angle, perfect for the spaces between warehouse racking.

Under the mezzanine level, rugged IP65 and IK08 4ft long Integral LED Vapourlite Non-Corrosive battens were chosen, offering power and CCT switching capabilities adjustable to suit the needs of the installation.

Motion sensors were also crucial to creating an efficient lighting scheme with both Microwave and PIR (Passive Infrared) options tested. PIR sensors were chosen for high-traffic areas such as goods in and packing and the perimeter areas of the warehouse floor, whilst Microwave sensors provided good detection in the central aisles and ensured lighting was available when required.

A separate emergency lighting scheme, using Integral LED 1500lm Self-Test Emergency Bulkhead luminaires, was installed to ensure regulation compliance and safe egress from the building. This is being covered by a stand-alone case study and excluded from the ROI calculations of the lighting scheme.

The results

During the renovation, all luminaires were switched from fluorescent to LED.

The previous installation consisted of:

• –  170x 5ft 4 lamp fluorescent high bays (80W lamps)
• –  64x 4ft twin lamp fluorescent battens (36W lamps)

The new installation consisted of:

• –  82x 0.3m Vector Max High Bay
• –  88x 0.6m Vector Max High Bay
• –  64x 4ft Vapourlite Battens

In doing so Integral LED managed to save a whopping £28,477.18 on energy costs per annum and will see a return on investment in 4 months. The switch also allowed Integral LED to save 81,363kWh of electricity and 21,561kg of carbon emissions every year.
