Achieving Net Zero for lighting must encompass everything from supply-chain sustainability and logistics to customer engagement – this was one of the key messages to come from the Net Zero Lighting Conference in London last week.

The event was organised by The Lighting Industry Association (LIA) and Recolight. It brought together 120 delegates and speakers for a comprehensive review of the challenges around the decarbonisation of manufacture in the industry. Lighting manufacturers Ledvance, Whitecroft, Stoane Lighting, and Knightsbridge, shared some of the strategies they have adopted to reduce carbon emissions.

“What’s clear to me is that moving towards Net Zero and sustainability is not a tick-box exercise, but more about changing the culture of your organisation,” said conference chair, Ray Molony. “And when you change that culture, good things flow. For instance, staff, especially younger members of the team, become energised and engaged in a way few management initiatives can achieve.”

Ray added “A number of companies said that they gained enormously from beginning their sustainability journey. Far from being a burden, gathering and analysing data on their processes such as their energy use and their supply-chain, helped organisations identify waste and potential cost savings. In some cases, the savings were dramatic.”

Nigel Harvey, Recolight CEO, said “It has been inspiring to hear of the work some lighting manufacturers are now undertaking as they start to decarbonise their operations. Nobody should underestimate the challenge this involves. But the commitment to make change was tangible, and the number of delegates confirming that they would implement changes as a result of the conference was very encouraging.”

Now in its fifth year of trading as an independent lighting company, Ovia has firmly established its reputation as a leading player in the lighting sector.

The company has just released Issue 5 of the Ovia Lighting Catalogue which showcases innovative new launches and draws attention to the company’s concerted efforts to contribute to the lighting industry’s transition to a circular economy.

The company is working towards making sure all of its Inceptor luminaires meet the requirements of the TM66 Assured Product Verification Scheme. This scheme is an innovative initiative developed and fulfilled by the Lighting Industry Association (LIA) and endorsed by CIBSE (Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers) and its aim is to advance circular economy practices within the lighting industry.

Scolmore Group has been a member of the LIA since 2012 and over the years has forged a close working relationship with the team at the Association, as the company strives to achieve excellence in product design, specification and performance. Having been accepted as founding partners for TM66 last year, Ovia has become more involved in discussions with the LIA on the importance of the circular economy and to highlight the company’s plans to support the TM66 verification scheme. Last year LIA Chief Executive Officer, Ayca Donaghy and Head of Policy and Sustainability, Bob Bohannon, visited Scolmore Group head office to meet with the Ovia team for discussions on the whole subject of the circular economy and the efforts being made by Ovia to drive its sustainability policies throughout the entire business operation.

Almost the entire range of Ovia’s Inceptor products have now been tested and scored very well on the TM66 Circularity Report. Testing involves the gathering of thorough evidence to support the specifications of the product range. The LIA verifies the TM66 results to ensure they have a consistent and accurate rating. Ovia will continue with its promise that every one of its Inceptor lighting products will get to the standards set by the TM66 report.

Switching up the Ovia lighting offer

Among the raft of Ovia’s TM66 verified products is the newly launched Inceptor Milli, an innovative IP65-rated, dimmable 4W and 6.4W fixed, fire-rated downlight that offers a range of features at the flick of a switch. There is the option to switch between 6.4W and 4W power outputs using a single switch, as well as the ability to easily switch the colour temperatures between 2700K (Warm White), 4000K (Cool White) and 6500K (Daylight). This allows for effortless adaptation to varying lighting needs and makes it easy for the end user to tailor their lighting to suit their individual requirements.

Integral LED has reached a major milestone in the history of the company – its 10th anniversary.

When Integral LED was founded 10 years ago many people were surprised by the apparent change in direction. Having been active in the memory sector since 1989, Integral was well respected, known for having a deep understanding of the industry and the semiconductor technology which makes memory tech tick. However, LEDs shifted the lighting industry into the electronics sector and if there is one thing Integral knew it was electronics and technology. Both being reliant on semiconductors, the foundations of the products were very similar with comparable problems, trends and lifecycles.

To stand by this intention Integral heavily in testing and training before launching a single product. Over a quarter of a million pounds was spent on facilitating an on-site lighting laboratory so that a multi-stage testing and quality assurance process could be implemented. Tested at sample stage, pre- and post- production and endorsed by the Lighting Industry Association’s Quality Assurance mark, Integral’s testing and quality control ensures that any product holding the Integral LED name backs the promise to provide trusted lighting solutions.

Looking to the future and the next 10 years, Integral believes there are exciting times ahead – the company will continue to grow its product offering and its new logistics facility in Calverton, Nottinghamshire, promises to improve service to its customers.

The LIA and Recolight are delighted to be collaborating on the Net Zero Lighting Conference 2024, taking place on 2nd May in London.

The agenda highlights net zero focused manufacturing practices within the lighting industry which covers: strategy, materials, energy, packaging, and best practice delivered from a variety of key players and experts in the industry.

The day will kick off with a welcome from Ayça Donaghy, CEO of The Lighting Industry Association, followed by an assessment of lessons learned and successes in minimising carbon footprint in their own organisation by Nigel Harvey, CEO of Recolight.

The conference places emphasis on the practical steps that lighting manufacturers can take to reduce the carbon emissions of all parts of their operations to contribute to the low carbon economy.  The two organisations have come together to organise this conference in recognition of the vital importance of this topic to our industry, drawing upon their combined expertise.
