Brass is back! That’s the overwhelming conclusion we’ve come to at Knightsbridge, taking into account what we’ve seen over the last couple of years in terms of wiring accessory sales. ‘Brasses’ as a finish option have surged in popularity, so much so that they are leaving matt black in their wake. Antique brass, in particular, is proving to be a major hit with the trade and consumers alike.

The appeal of brass is no doubt helped by the combination of finishes and styles in switches and sockets, allowing consumers to mix and match depending on their tastes and requirements. The recent introduction of our screwless antique brass range has increased choice yet further and the finish is rapidly becoming one of the most popular choices in our brasses options.

Obviously, the question remains why brass should become so popular when matt black has dominated the design stakes for so long. A definitive answer is probably difficult to arrive at, but we can look at the wider design environment for specific influences.

Striking a chord with homeowners

At the beginning of the year a few ‘interiors’ magazines were touting mixing metal finishes as opposed to matching them, citing examples of pairing warm metals like brass and copper with cooler ones like stainless steel or brushed nickel. Maybe this has struck a chord with homeowners, and we are seeing an increase in the use of brass finishes as a result.

Another view is that homeowners are seeking what might be termed ‘timeless’ luxury, an enduring and lasting aesthetic that brass carries off so well. There’s also the practical element that brass tones can be paired with kitchen and bathroom hardware such as taps and handles, which allows wiring accessories to be seen as a design feature rather than simply functional.

Power to the people

If brass is the newish trendsetter, there has been a reoccurring theme for us at Knightsbridge over the last few years and that has been around delivering faster and more efficient charging for modern devices. The sheer number of phones, tablets and laptops in the home or office means that charging points are in demand and become a bottleneck that is often resolved through the creative use of adapters, chargers and extension leads!

In a bid to create a more efficient, speedier way of charging devices, we came up with the 13A double pole switched socket with dual USB-C (65W Dual Fastcharge). The socket features dual USB-C outputs that can deliver up to 65W total power. Users can charge two devices simultaneously at 45W and 18W or power a single device, such as a laptop, at the full 65W without any need for bulky adaptors.

Rather than split power between ports, the 65W Dual Fastcharge model ensures optimal performance even when charging multiple devices. Supporting USB-PD (power delivery) and PPS (programmable power supply) protocols, it provides universal compatibility with smartphones, tablets and laptops.

The Tenax range of polycarbonate bulkheads from Knightsbridge has just got tougher and more versatile with the introduction of the Tenax Pro Series and two more gear trays.

The modular design and wide range of options enable the Tenax Pro to be tailored to any situation without requiring an extensive inventory – there are up to 48 different combinations out of the base choices of cases and gear trays.

The casing can be square or round, black or grey, standard or anti-vandal eyelid design and there is a choice of eight gear trays: standard, emergency, self-test, microwave, emergency microwave, self-test microwave and the two latest additions, which are equipped with daylight sensors.

The standard LED gear tray delivers luminosity ranging from 1,200lm at 10W to 2,100lm at 20W, ensuring adequate illumination while maintaining energy efficiency. The emergency LED gear tray goes further by incorporating a three-hour emergency backup powered by a lithium (LiFeP04) battery, ensuring continued operation during power outages.

Laptops and other power-hungry devices can now be USB-charged directly from the socket thanks to Knightsbridge’s new 63W PD (Power Delivery) wall charger.

Suited to commercial and retail environments such as hotels, cafés, bars and offices, the wall charger is Knightsbridge’s most powerful yet and supports PD, Programmable Power Supply (PPS) and Quick Charge (QC) through two USB-C and one USB-A ports.

With compatible cables, PD and PPS laptops can be charged straight from the socket using a 63W USB-C port, without the need for bulky adaptors. With the latest USB-C interface, many Android and Apple devices also support fast charging PD technology.

PPS fast charging is the most advanced charging technology for USB-C devices. The technology adjusts the voltage and current in real-time, depending on a device’s charging status, feeding it with maximum power.

The sockets are available in a sleek black raised rounded edge model or the premium screwless collection and in the company’s most popular decorative finishes: anthracite, brushed chrome, matt black, and matt white.

The sockets are rated at IP20 for dust ingress of dust and objects over 12mm in diameter; and are also LVD, EMC and ErP certified giving peace of mind to the installer and end user. Further peace of mind is provided by a two-year warranty.

For residential use – and/ or where USB charging is required alongside ‘three pin power’ – Knightsbridge also offers two gang sockets which deliver up to 45W PD over a USB-C port and 18W QC over a USB-A port. The new SpektroLED EVO downlight from Knightsbridge is an advanced evolution of the company’s hugely popular and innovative SpektroLED.

Building on the versatility and flexibility of its predecessor, EVO offers selectable wattages, colour temperatures and six interchangeable bezel finishes and comes in three versions: fixed, tilt and smart.

When launched, the configurable SpektroLED downlight represented a huge leap forward in versatility and choice for lighting projects; offering unparallelled choice in performance, and style in one package, doing away with the need to specify multiple LED lamp types.

Expanding these permutations of wattage, colour temperature and bezel choice, the ultra-low profile SpektroLED EVO Fixed, Tilt and Smart offers a 108-downlights-in-one range solution.

Depending on the required illumination, either 5W (up to 465 lumens) or 7W (up to 795 lumens) can be pre-selected via a switch on the lamp body. Once chosen, there are four CCTs available – 2700K, 3000K, 4000K and 6000K – the desired colour temperature also selected by a sliding switch. The LED beam angle is 60°and the tilt variant can be adjusted to 90^o as required.

LED Flex strip lighting from Knightsbridge is ideal for creating ambient lighting in kitchens, bedrooms and other spaces deserving colourful and energy efficient accents.

Flex’s low profile – from 1.5mm to 2mm – and 8mm width makes it ideal for hard to access, space-constrained locations, while its 3M self-adhesive backing tape provides a robust and durable fixing. Waste is kept to a minimum because installers can cut the LED Flex to fit at 50mm intervals and use the excess elsewhere, re-connecting it to other strips of product where necessary.

Both single and four colour (red, green, blue and white) versions are available, supported by dedicated drivers, controllers and profiles that offer a quick solution to most indoor installations.

The colour-changing RGBW LED Flex are available with smart technology so they can be controlled through Knightsbridge’s proprietary SmartKnight app.

The company has also introduced ‘COB’ single colour seamless strip lighting. COB stands for Chip on Board, meaning the LED diodes are built directly into the printed circuit board. The seamless strip lighting is ideal for illuminating indoor spaces since it offers a larger lighting area than traditional alternatives, resulting in no dark spots and perfect colour consistency and uniformity. The COB strip lighting is supplied with 150mm of cable and is dimmable with the appropriate control.

Rated IP20 for indoor use, the 12V single colour range offers colour temperatures from 3000K to 6500K and light outputs from 510lm per metre upwards in white only. Its 24V equivalent is also for indoor use, but available in various colour temperatures of white as well as red, blue and green. The colour-changing models are rated at IP20 for indoor use and IP67 options are also available.
