New industry research from test equipment specialists Martindale Electric has revealed that 86% of electrical professionals have experienced an ‘electrical incident’ at work and it’s just part of a wider picture of many electrical incidents and near misses among UK electrical professionals.

Martindale Electric has published new research showing the true scale of electrical incidents experienced by professionals working with electricity every day. An ‘electrical incident’ or ‘near miss’ includes minor electric shocks, arc events and unexpected energisation.

The findings, based on a survey sent to tens of thousands of electrical contracting professionals, were gathered to better understand real-world experiences of electrical safety, electrical incidents and incident reporting across the industry.

Among the key findings, Martindale Electric found:

86% of electrical professionals have personally experienced at least one electrical incident while working

A massive 78% of those who responded have had a ‘near miss’

64% have witnessed an electrical incident involving another electrician on the job

Over half of electrical professionals stated that the most recent incident or near miss they experienced or witnessed was not reported formally.

86% of electrical professionals say they are very familiar with Safe Isolation Procedures but only 55% always follow it in full before starting work

If the Safe Isolation Procedure has not been followed fully before starting work, the most common reason given was ‘confidence the circuit was dead’ (46%), followed by ‘Time pressure’ (25%).

This gap between knowing the procedure and following it every time is where accidents happen. Martindale Electric developed ALIVE, a memorable five-step framework designed to make safe isolation second nature for anyone working on or near electrical systems:

A is for approved kit (equipment must meet legal safety standards)

L is for lockout ( point of isolation should be identified, locked out and tagged)

I is for initial prove (voltage indicator should be tested against a proving unit)

V is for voltage test (electricians must confirm there is no dangerous voltage in the circuit)

E is for ensure (the voltage indicator must be re-tested against the proving unit before starting work)

“These figures show that electrical incidents and near misses are still far too common on-site and that too many go unreported,” said Steve Dunning, Managing Director of Martindale Electric.

“It is positive to see that almost every respondent to our research recognises the Safe Isolation Procedure, but recognising it and following it fully every single time are clearly two different things. We really want to encourage everyone working around electricity to maintain their awareness of electrical safety procedures and use the resources available to keep their knowledge up to date on the latest safety practices and guidance.

“Our ALIVE acronym is a simple, five-step routine that takes the guesswork out of staying safe and we’d encourage every electrical professional to make following it second nature, every single time.”

The Martindale Electrical Safety in the Workplace Survey 2026 was conducted between June and July 2026 to gather original insight from professionals who work with or around electricity. More than 100,000 electrical professionals were invited to participate in the survey.

Safe isolation is the cornerstone of electrical safety, and it is a rigorous process, but other hazards can still be present when working on electrical systems, warn Martindale Electric.

One such issue is the injuries caused to engineers, contractors, electricians and other workers coming into contact with unexpectedly live metal parts. This includes items such as metal casings on equipment or appliances, pipework, and other types of metalwork which should be earthed. This invisible danger can be present in any workplace situation ranging from simple domestic systems through to commercial and industrial installations.

Martindale is running a new awareness campaign ‘STOP. No Check. No Contact!’ reminding anyone working on or near electricity not to take any chances with exposed metal parts and to always check first, as they may be live.

“Standard industry-wide safe isolation procedures safely disconnect the supply from the circuit to allow safe rework, maintenance, or installation to take place,” said Steve Dunning, Managing Director at Martindale Electric.

“They do not cover checking for live metal parts though, so incorporating this discipline into established work processes will further minimise risk and help ensure safer working practices. Remember, if the metalwork is not checked for being live don’t touch it: Stop. No check. No contact!”

By linking the STOP. No Check. No Contact! – message to the many safe isolation products and activities from Martindale the focus is on building awareness around this important safety issue.

The ‘Consequence of Non-Compliance’ initiative comes at a critical time, as heightened regulatory scrutiny, increasingly complex system requirements and rising safety expectations emphasise the need for full conformance with all relevant standards.

The Group aims to ensure that LV switchboard designers, manufacturers, and installers understand and implement the necessary BS EN IEC 61439-2 conformity assessment protocols at every stage, from concept to commissioning.

The campaign is designed to provide clear guidance and access to technical resources, with the central asset being an eye-catching poster which has been designed to support the industry in implementing best practices. It also highlights the technical resources BEAMA’s LV Switchboard and Busbar Systems (LSBS) Product Group has developed, including a Guide to Verification for Low-voltage Power Switchgear and Controlgear Assemblies (PSC) in accordance with BS EN IEC 61439-2:2021.

Nick Hayler, CEng MIET, Head of Building Electrical Systems at BEAMA, commented: “Conformity is not just a regulatory requirement, it’s fundamental to safety, reliability and trust across the supply chain. With regulatory scrutiny intensifying, systems becoming more complex and safety expectations rising, it has never been more critical to ensure that every stage of the switchboard lifecycle – from design and specification through to installation and commissioning – is in full conformance with the relevant standards.”

It wasn’t that long ago that you’d find expensive cable management systems with cables installed, operational and apparently secured using cheap cable ties rather than cable cleats. Thankfully, things have moved on a great deal since those dangerous days, but there are still plenty of pitfalls to beware of. Lee Frizzell, Technical Director of CMP Products, offers advice on what to consider when specifying and installing cable management products.

From our perspective as a leading manufacturer of cable glands, cleats and accessories, we do have very specific areas of expertise within the cable management arena – namely the operational safety of the system once installed and the delivery of the peace of mind that it won’t cause untold damage in a short circuit situation.

Choices

It is though worth nothing that any element of a cable management system needs to be carefully considered, and products selected and chosen wisely – whether it be a choice between cable ladder or tray; the depth of channel; the chosen product’s weight bearing capacity; the cable formation; corrosion resistant capabilities etc. One wrong choice or the selection of an unproven product made on price alone could undermine an entire system and lead to costly maintenance, repairs and possible catastrophic failure.

When it comes to cable cleats and working with CMP, we always aim to get across the key fact that their importance must never be underestimated. Cable cleats are safety critical products that need to be correctly specified to safely secure electrical cables not only during normal operating conditions, but also ensuring they are able to withstand extreme dynamic electromagnetic forces during a short circuit without sheath damage.

Effective cleating of cables by using a tested, proven product ensures the continuation of potentially vital electrical supplies and prevents cables leaping out of their containment systems during a short circuit, which would pose a very real threat to the building’s integrity and the lives of those in the vicinity of the affected installation.

Put simply, for any electrical installation to be deemed safe, cables need to be protected and restrained by devices proven to withstand the forces the cables generate – especially during a short circuit. This is exactly what our cable cleats are designed and tested to do.

Cleat considerations

There are a variety of things to consider when specifying cable cleats, but two key points that could make all the difference are:

Trust – There are lots of cable cleats out there and it’s fair to say they can look very similar and claim to have very similar attributes. Therefore, it’s important to specify with confidence. You’d think twice about buying an expensive new phone from an unknown telecoms manufacturer, so don’t do the same with cable cleats. Look at the company behind the product; their technical expertise; the post-sales support they offer; where else have their cleats been used and are any of the installations similar?

Testing – Will the cable cleats you’re considering be up to the job? Some manufacturers will highlight the strength of their products based solely on a static mechanical tensile test. Unfortunately, this can be misleading as the forces applied in this type of test are applied in a slow and controlled manner, unlike in a short-circuit fault, where dynamic forces are applied almost instantaneously and oscillate in every direction. A short circuit test really is the only reliable way of knowing a cable cleat can withstand a specific set of fault conditions and is essential for anyone, anywhere to specify with confidence.

Trust and testing carry over into cable glands and accessories, where they really should be at the heart of every specification decision.

Also necessary for consideration across the cable management spectrum, are the environment of the installation and fire safety properties of the products. For environmental compatibility, you must consider everything from operating temperatures to UV and corrosion resistance. And when it comes to fire resistance, cable cleats must have the same flame retardancy as the cable they’re securing.

Cable glands

Cable glands require additional consideration due to the issue of electromagnetic interference (EMI) – something that is governed by the EMC 2014/30/EU Directive. This enforces limitations on all electrical and electronic equipment that may cause or be affected by EMI and requires that products must not generate unwanted electromagnetic pollution or interference and that they must be immune to a reasonable amount of noise pollution or interference.

However, there is a significant oversight at the point of cable entry into an electrical enclosure. By adding openings in enclosures, pathways are created to allow noise to breach the shielded enclosure. Unterminated or poorly terminated cable shields can allow noise to be carried into the enclosures, acting as antennas to radiate noise onto sensitive circuits. Grounding the cable shield effectively inside a cable gland at point of entry eliminates a potential noise pathway and reduces the risks of radiated emissions being carried into the enclosure.

Cable glands that employ a robust 360° circumferential termination of the cable screen, shield braid or armour (e.g. with a cone and clamping ring, or a dedicated EMC continuity device) in their metallic body, contribute to the electromagnetic compatibility of installations through reliable low impedance connections. Stats that are backed up by a number of industry studies into the role they can play in EMC protection.

It’s therefore vital that specified cable glands have been tested for attenuation of EMI and provide the protection required. Underspecified cable glands could cause significant issues to the integrity of the electrical systems on which they are fitted.

Proven solutions

When it comes to improving electrical safety, whether it be with the intention of protecting people, power supplies or data, it’s imperative that every potential step is taken to ensure the systems are the most robust they possibly can be. As such, suitably proven cable management products need to be given careful consideration so that they don’t become the weak link in system – causing operational failure and tarnishing reputations.

Electricians rely on test equipment every day to keep installations safe, compliant and problem-free. Getting to know the key test products and how they are used can help you serve your customer better, says Steve Dunning, Managing Director at Martindale.

Electrical testing isn’t just a regulatory requirement – it’s a vital part of keeping people and structures safe. Whether it’s verifying that a socket is wired correctly or proving a circuit is dead before work begins, the right testing equipment gives electricians confidence on the job.

Top five

When you stock the testing tools that your customers trust, you’re not only supporting safer working practices but building long-term customer loyalty. Here are five of the most in-demand pieces of electrical test equipment.

Multi-Function Testers (MFTs)

Multi-function testers are indispensable. They can perform a range of tests including continuity tests, insulation resistance tests, earth fault low impedance tests and wiring polarity, among others.

Combining so many tests into one easy-to-use device means less equipment to carry around and fewer cables to connect. As these devices walk the user through each step and flag any issues, they are far less likely to make errors or have to perform tests for a second time. By cutting out the need to swap between different devices, MFTs are also real time savers and can make a significant difference on larger projects or jobs where deadlines are tight.

For wholesalers who want to stock efficient MFTs, the Martindale ET6000 Series covers a wide variety of essential testing tasks, including high-current and non-trip earth loop impedance testing, voltage measurement, phase sequence indication and Auto RCD testing. The ET6300 and ET6500 are also EV ready.

Voltage Indicators

Voltage indicators (VIs) are critical for verifying the presence or absence of voltage in a circuit, providing a quick visual or auditory indication that helps determine whether it’s safe to proceed with work. VIs should function without a battery. This is because if the battery in the device is flat, a false ‘dead’ reading could be made on a live circuit.

We are often asked why multimeters or non-contact voltage detectors can’t be used instead. The reason a Multimeter is not suitable is because it is too easy to select the wrong range and, as previously highlighted, they use batteries. Non-contact voltage detectors also require a battery and a standard proving unit cannot prove the device is working correctly – a specialist proving device is needed for this.

Proving Units

Incorporating voltage indicators and voltage testers into your electrical safety strategy makes for a strong and reliable safe isolation procedure. But to truly ensure a circuit is not live, it’s crucial users check their voltage indicator (VI) with a known source, such as a proving unit, both before and after they test the circuit. This double-check confirms the VI is working correctly.

Martindale offers several proving units for a variety of voltage levels – 240V, 440V and 690V – from the entry level PD230SRD to the PD690SRD, which supplies the full test voltage for both high and low impedance voltage indicators, test lamps and meters.

Portable Appliance Testers (PAT Testers)

PAT testing is an important part of electrical safety in the workplace and for good reason – the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) reports that a quarter of all reportable electrical accidents involve portable appliances. The Electricity at Work Regulations (1989) states employers are required to ensure that any electrical equipment that could cause injury is kept in a safe condition.

A good PAT tester should be light, compact and easily portable as most tests will be performed on site rather than in a workshop. The tester should have a clear pass/fail indication, ideal for quick on-the-go testing, while straightforward menus and inbuilt auto-test sequences are also very useful, especially for those new to PAT testing.

When advising on testers, it’s worth knowing the purpose; someone carrying out occasional tests on low-risk equipment might only need a basic pass/fail tester, while a contractor working across multiple client sites might benefit from a tester with onboard data storage.

Socket Testers

A socket tester is a first-line indicator to identify potentially unsafe installations and wiring faults. While all socket testers will confirm that fundamental connections like earth, live and neutral are correctly established, those classified as advanced or professional also help verify the quality of the earth. The results from these tests are typically shown through LEDs that light up in different patterns to alert the user to the current state of the socket in terms of presence of voltage. In some models, an audible buzzer might also be used to indicate the status.

There are a wide variety of socket testers on the market to choose from which can make it challenging to select the most appropriate one. Martindale has a wealth of information on its website outlining the different types available and their capabilities. The Electrical Safety First guidance note Best Practice Guide 8 (version 2) “Selection and Use of Plug In Socket Testing Devices” is also an excellent source of information.

Meeting demands

Stocking these five essential pieces of test equipment ensures that your customers have access to the essential tools required for electrical safety and compliance. By offering reliable, user-friendly products from reputable manufacturers, you can meet the demands of professionals in the field and support safe electrical practices across various industries.

The humble electrical fuse is often the unsung hero of circuit protection. Harsha Raghaven of Lawson Fuses explains why it remains such a vital component.

In the world of electrical engineering, circuit protection is a critical aspect that ensures the safety and longevity of electrical systems. Amongst the various methods of circuit protection, fuses have stood the test of time as one of the most reliable and essential components and have continued to do so, due to the constant review of international and local standards, improved design capability and modern manufacturing techniques.

It is a testament to the longevity of a type of component initially patented in 1890, with first British Standard getting released in 1919 and Lawson Fuses have been designing and manufacturing these fuses since 1938, with more demand for new types and higher quantities each year.

Protect and connect

Circuit protection involves the implementation of devices and mechanisms designed to prevent excessive current flow, which can cause overheating, fires, and damage to electrical components. The primary goal is to ensure that electrical systems operate within safe parameters, thereby protecting both the equipment and the users.

As electrical circuits become ever more complex, and regulations more stringent, there are many different circuit protection devices available, including circuit breakers, surge protectors, residual current devices and fuses. Each of these devices has its unique characteristics and applications, but fuses remain a fundamental component due to their simplicity, reliability, and effectiveness.

The silent guardian

A fuse is a simple yet ingenious device that consists of a metal element or wire that melts when excessive current flows through it. This melting action breaks the circuit, stopping the flow of electricity and preventing damage to the system. A lot of fuses are dual action, in that they will protect against low over currents but will also protect against massive currents generated by a short circuit failure. Fuses are designed to be the weakest link in an electrical circuit, ensuring that they will fail before any other component is damaged.

The key advantages of fuses include:

Speed: Fuses are generally faster than other protection devices for short circuit protection and will operate around 2ms, which is approximately 10 times faster than other types of protection.

Application: Whilst other protection devices are for low voltage protection only, fuses are suitable for very low and very high voltages, ranging from miniature devices for 230V up to full HV qualified fuses. The breaking capacity of a fuse will generally always be much higher. Typical breaking capacities are 80kA and 120kA, as opposed to typical ratings of 15kA for other devices.

Simplicity: Fuses are straightforward devices with no moving parts, making them easy to understand and use.

Reliability: Fuses provide consistent and predictable protection, as they are designed to operate under specific conditions.

Cost-Effectiveness: Fuses are generally inexpensive compared to other circuit protection devices, making them an economical choice for many applications.

For all the above reason, despite the development of more sophisticated circuit protection devices, fuses remain indispensable. Especially, like the one developed by Lawson Fuses; High Rupture Capacity (HRC) fuses are the backbone of industry protection as they offer such varied options for LV to HV, massive breaking capacities and offer protection against low current overloads and short circuit failures.

There is an enormous range of sizes and fittings available so there will always be a fuse that is suitable for your application, no matter how new or old your system is. Types include bolted, offset tags, slotted tags, cylindrical and square body with a choice of size depending on your current rating requirement.

Modern alternatives and their limitations

While modern alternatives like circuit breakers and electronic protection devices offer advanced features and greater flexibility, they also come with certain limitations:

Complexity: Circuit breakers and electronic protection devices are more complex than fuses, requiring regular maintenance and calibration to ensure proper operation.

Cost: These advanced devices are generally more expensive than fuses, which can be a significant factor in large-scale applications.

Response Time: Although circuit breakers can offer adjustable trip settings, they may not always respond as quickly as fuses in certain overcurrent conditions.

Conclusion

In conclusion, fuses continue to be a vital component of circuit protection due to their simplicity, reliability, cost-effectiveness, and quick response time. The various fuse standard committees are highly active, and the IEC has released updated standards for LV fuses in the last couple of months.

The opportunity for electrical wholesalers is clear; providing a wide choice of tools and devices to support electricians in protecting themselves and others. The supply of this equipment is not only an opportunity to generate sales, but an opportunity to save lives.

Supplying the right tools for the job

Isolating an electrical network involves several important steps, from isolating it the energy source, verifying no voltage is present and the usage of effective lockout devices to prevent the circuit being re-energised until after work is complete – for each step of the process it is vital that effective, trusted tools and equipment are used.

This includes a voltage indicator, with the means to prove it is operational usually with the use of a dedicated proving unit, insulated tools, lockout devices and signage to warn others to avoid disaster should a circuit inadvertently remain live.

With such a wide range of equipment available, the choice of product can often be overwhelming. Lockout devices play one of the most crucial roles in the safe isolation process by preventing the circuit being re-energised until after work is complete by ensuring a circuit breaker remains in a specific on or off position – an important step to ensure the safety of the workforce. There are a number of options available when it comes to lockout devices; some are universal while others are designed to fit specific brands, but by employing a variety of devices, retailers can help users to significantly reduce the risk of injury.
