Signify has been appointed by Leonardo UK to help accelerate its carbon reduction as part of the company’s ambitious sustainability strategy.

In support of Leonardo’s sustainability strategy – including a recently approved Science Based Target – and drive to Net-Zero in the UK, Signify has signed a 10 year Light as a Service (LaaS) agreement that includes the full turnkey installation of LED lighting with Interact lighting management software, across 14 buildings at the Yeovil site. The lighting in each building has been carefully designed to ensure a safe and productive work environment for the 3,300 highly skilled personnel across the site.

Signify’s LaaS model is a performance-based contract that guarantees light-level performance for the full duration of the contract. Crucially, the execution of the new lighting system does not require upfront capital investment – instead, Leonardo pays Signify an annual operating fee. This LaaS model enables Leonardo to realise cash-positive savings from the first year. Once completed, the programme is expected to reduce Leonardo’s location-based CO₂ emissions by an estimated 725 tons per year, supporting Somerset Council’s Climate Emergency Strategy.

Leonardo is one of the UK’s leading aerospace companies and one of the biggest suppliers of defence and security equipment to the UK MOD, making a significant contribution to the UK economy. Leonardo’s Yeovil site is the Home of British Helicopters – offering end-to-end helicopter manufacturing, training, and lifecycle services to operators worldwide.

As part of the redesign, the buildings will also see the deployment of Signify’s lighting management system, Interact. The connected lighting system combines energy-efficient Philips LED fixtures with advanced sensors and Interact software. The system will ensure that the LED fixtures are only turned on when an area is occupied. When there is sufficient natural daylight, the LED fixtures will automatically dim to compensate. This maximises lighting energy savings while ensuring a safe working environment.

Achieving Net Zero for lighting must encompass everything from supply-chain sustainability and logistics to customer engagement – this was one of the key messages to come from the Net Zero Lighting Conference in London last week.

The event was organised by The Lighting Industry Association (LIA) and Recolight. It brought together 120 delegates and speakers for a comprehensive review of the challenges around the decarbonisation of manufacture in the industry. Lighting manufacturers Ledvance, Whitecroft, Stoane Lighting, and Knightsbridge, shared some of the strategies they have adopted to reduce carbon emissions.

“What’s clear to me is that moving towards Net Zero and sustainability is not a tick-box exercise, but more about changing the culture of your organisation,” said conference chair, Ray Molony. “And when you change that culture, good things flow. For instance, staff, especially younger members of the team, become energised and engaged in a way few management initiatives can achieve.”

Ray added “A number of companies said that they gained enormously from beginning their sustainability journey. Far from being a burden, gathering and analysing data on their processes such as their energy use and their supply-chain, helped organisations identify waste and potential cost savings. In some cases, the savings were dramatic.”

Nigel Harvey, Recolight CEO, said “It has been inspiring to hear of the work some lighting manufacturers are now undertaking as they start to decarbonise their operations. Nobody should underestimate the challenge this involves. But the commitment to make change was tangible, and the number of delegates confirming that they would implement changes as a result of the conference was very encouraging.”

Achievements to date 

In the current fiscal year, we reduced over 7,500 tonnes of CO₂ by switching our production sites to green electricity. We have also been committed to transparent reporting and independent assessments. Since 2018, our sustainability activities have been evaluated by the external rating agency EcoVadis. Following the previous silver rating, we achieved a gold award for the first time in 2021. This puts the Group in the top 3% of 75,000 companies worldwide. 

Environmental Product Declarations 

We have also been offering transparency at the product level for the last decade by providing Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) which provide customers with information on the environmental impact of products throughout their entire lifecycle. 

Our plan 

To publicly demonstrate our commitment to operating our business responsibly, we are looking to offer and develop more sustainable products and solutions and find ways to improve our processes to reduce waste, reduce energy consumption and lower carbon emissions. 

This will be achieved by investing in research and development to bring you, our customers and partners, innovative technologies through products and solutions so that you can also reach your own goals when tackling this shared, universal issue. 

Our technology  

One such example is our NightTune Technology. According to a news article published on the International Dark-Sky Association’s website, “Globally, we spend at least $50 billion in energy costs each year to produce light that escapes into space.” 

Not only does waste light negatively impact our dark skies, but artificial light at night can also affect human wellbeing and wildlife.  

Thorn Lighting’s NightTune technology has been designed to limit these negative impacts of artificial light at night. It achieves this by adjusting colour temperatures and outputs depending on the time of night and the surrounding environment. As part of a recent lighting project, we collaborated with Cumbria County Council to install NightTune Technology-integrated dark sky-friendly lighting at sites across the county to protect the dark skies and local wildlife, improving people’s perception of safety, encouraging social interaction and increasing energy efficiency.  

Circular economy  

The Group has integrated “Circular Design Rules” into our development processes to establish circular economy principles. These rules cover aspects along the whole value chain, which are applied to every new product development. The core ideas of the circular economy are further established with workshops and training, and through analysis and exchange with partners, new circular business models are evaluated. 

We are on a journey. Whether providing high quality EPDs, introducing technologies that enable sustainable lighting to protect the dark skies or working with clients to help them increase energy efficiency, our goal is simple: To reduce our CO2 emissions and to be a partner of choice in helping others achieve theirs.
